Is Tory Burch trashy and gaudy to wear? Negative connotation?

I would never, ever say this anywhere but an anon message board, but TB bags don't seem nearly as try-hard as Neverfulls/St. Louis totes on the working NoVA moms I know. Like girl, I know you're stressing about paying for summer camp. Don't come around here with a 3k+ bag.

But I feel the same way about luxury cars driven by anyone but the legit rich. Just seems like advertising that you have no financial sense and are trying to show off. Enjoy parking that Range Rover in front of your split level, I guess.

Agree re LV bags. As for me, logos aren't my thing, but I won't claim to have never displayed one in my life. Also, maybe the person got the TB shoes/bag at Nordstrom Bag, you know, and isn't necessarily striving.

I'm not a fan of the logos on the shoes.

Some people just find 'entry level luxury' trashy, like it's so 'gaudy' to spend $300 on a bag instead of $3000.

OP, why do you care about such a person's opinion?

But therein lies the circular flawed logic in justifying these bags. Why do you like THIS $300 bag more than the zillions of similarly priced bags without logos, or the similar quality/asthetic bags that are half the price without logos? Presumably, something about the idea of the Tory Burch brand appeals to you. So for those who say "who cares what others say, just buy the bag you like" - are failing to acknowledge that a big part of the psychology that people "like" these bags is because of the brand, and what that brand conveys to others.

So yes, of course buy what you like. But if what you like is TB, you probably care about the message your bag is sending to others - in which case, the message it is sending is entry level mall shopper.

I say all this as someone who has expensive purses and i have a lot of money to buy whatever I want, but my favorite brand is Hobo - because i genuinely like the asthetic and function, and the quality is phenomenal (last for years) - but no one recognizes the brand or probably thinks anything about my purses because they are non descript.

Perhaps because THIS bag is readily available at the stores you have ready access to or already shop at? Because you don't want to spend days looking for a bag with the same quality and style when one that you like is right there? I mean, maybe some people like the brand," but others might just ... be familiar with the brand, and not familiar with other brands, and not want to put that much effort into it.

DP. That's all fine but also indicates that you don't care much about fashion or quality at all if you aren't willing to do even the most minimal research or look around at all. Especially in the age of the internet -- you could spend 5 minutes online and find three different bags at that price point that are well reviewed by reliable sources and choose the one you like the most very easily.

So if you are choosing the TB or Michael Kors bag because it's the first thing you saw upon walking into an outlet or a Macy's or whatever, that is totally fine. But it's also not particularly fashionable or tasteful either. You put no thought into it.

Some people in the DMV think Coach and Tory Burch isn't high brow enough, because so many people wear it/can afford it.

Late 50s but they are very much styled like Meryl Streep in the Devil Wears Prada. Wears a cape in the fall/winter, patent high heels, etc.. we are colleagues. I am 36 fwiw.

Well, if you care about her opinion, you care about her opinion. But if you don’t, who cares that she doesn’t like the bag. Guess you’re just trying to figure out if others have that opinion.

There is a certain new money/UMC vibe to it.

I feel like I’m missing something but I see quite a large number of ladies locally here in the DMV that wear her logo and items (shoes, bags). I thought the brand was just quite popular. Like lululemon.

Get what you like, OP. Who cares what anyone thinks? And everyone has different opinions on everything. I love Tory Burch myself and couldn’t care less if someone disagrees.

I love some of Tory Burch’s dresses and my favorite accordion pleated skirt is from her…for some reason her accessories don’t appeal to me as much as her clothes have.

My work bag is Marc Jacobs with a barely visible logo because it was the right size for the laptop I owned at the time. My wallet is coach from when they had the tattersall lining I was obsessed with (still kind of am…) my mom got it for me when I was in college, now in my 30s.

The long ramble is to say…brands are not monoliths and you will find things within every brand that is tacky/try hard/“basic” (hate that misogynistic phrase) but you will also find staples. I would try to rise above the noise and wear what appeals to you and fits into your lifestyle well.

So someone who buys those items is clearly looking to advertise their brand to the world - but for a basic mall brand that 30% of the population can afford. So what's the point? ANd what does it say about the wearer?

Seems better to just spend a lot less money, or buy something the same price but without the flashy label.

What does it say? OMG. Maybe they just like the bag?!

+1. If I have a bag, it’s because I like the way it looks, feels and wears.

I like that bag. I usually hate logos but I actually don't think that is bad. Maybe because it's so giant it loses something and the yellow color of the bag is nice, I don't mind?

This. For people in their 20s that just got their first decent paying job.
Then they graduate to an NV neverfull in their 30s.

What do they get for their 40s?

Tory Burch bags are not trashy or gaudy--they certainly do not say "new money."

They are simply out-dated and frumpy at this point.

Displaying any brand at all is tacky and gauche.

Absolutely.
