Well, I guess if you compare a flagship with private schools (which all of those are), then yes — it’s not as strong; but it’s not a bad school at all. UMass is respectable, does a lot of research (and earns a lot of grant money). On top of that, my child (who currently attends UMass) is happy there and feels like he is learning a lot and has a lot of opportunities ahead of him.

My daughter is excited to apply to UMass! It might be because they have the best food on campus. But seriously, it seems like a nice, diverse school in a pretty setting. It's also well-regarded in her intended major. Glad to hear that you daughter really likes it!

Whoops, sorry, I mean your son! I shouldn't post after midnight.

University of Rochester is severely overrated

Reasoning for this? We think it's an amazing university

+1 University of Rochester is UNDERRATED. I’m an alum.

Serious academics, great campus life, students who are well rounded and relatively lower key. U of R is particularly good if you want to go to an elite grad program after. That said I wouldn’t choose it if a) grad school wasn’t on the horizon or b) you don’t plan to live in NY State or adjacent. It’s not as well known and the name throws people off. (They should have named it Eastman University when they had the chance…)

I can’t think of one classmate who doesn’t have a successful professional career. Lots of PHDs, MDs, JDs, MBA Wall Street types, engineers, politicians, entrepreneurs etc. I always feel like the dumb one for ONLY having a Masters and a regular business-y job.

Acceptance rate over 30%
Yield around 20%

It's ranked #36 but kids don't want to go there

Compare it to other private schools ranked in the 40s like Boston University, Northeastern, Tulane, Case Western.

It's salary number is also mediocre for a T50 school at $68K

It's highly overrated/overranked.
It should be ranked mid 40s

Just read about Wofford College in South Carolina. If my kid didn’t already have a full, she said she’d give it some thought.

I have a middle school friend from small town MD who went to Wofford back in the 90s. She loved it.

That said, SC is a state with unfree women, so it isn't going on any lists for my own daughter

Nah, he's cool. The people who use them in their marketing, on the other hand, are sus.

It is diverse and the food is fantastic! . More than that, my introvert child is getting involved in activities and making friends. The school does a really good job creating opportunities to be part of a community.

It would help if the south wasn’t passing regressive, hateful policies

Faculty and students at many southern schools are against such policies and not afraid to speak up.

that isn't enough, unfortunately

No matter how great the school, it is hard to look past the idiocy of the state laws

Drive out of state to get your abortion. Just like you file for bankruptcy in certain states, divorce in Vegas or incorporate in Connecticut. Done

If you think this is all about abortions, you aren’t paying attention

NU is in Illinois, not Massachusetts.

Huh? I agree NU vs NW is confusing, but I think most people know NU is Northwestern, located in IL as PP noted. https://www.northwestern.edu/
