University of Rochester is severely overrated

Reasoning for this? We think it's an amazing university

Impressions of SUNYs? Topic is too broad I know bc many schools are overlooked. Guess I'm also wondering aside from prestige, which schools perhaps are a bit overlooked?

Maybe Syracuse University. I know someone there who loved it.

Most of the Midwest state flagships. People get that Michigan and Wisconsin are good, but they don’t even seem to know what Indiana is.

Idk about underrated but schools on east and west coast are overrated because they have better name recognition and more people are attracted to location than education.

I think good schools in south are highly underrated.

It would help if the south wasn’t passing regressive, hateful policies

If you are interested in STEM then Case Western. It is near the top from Med and Nursing.

+1 also Minnesota and Indiana.

Faculty and students at many southern schools are against such policies and not afraid to speak up.

that isn't enough, unfortunately

No matter how great the school, it is hard to look past the idiocy of the state laws

And the consortium with the other local schools is such a great thing. Smith was heavily recruiting me, so I did research it a little bit. Didn’t wind up in MA, but I think the schools there are worth a look

#26 top public school and #67 overall. We have been super-impressed thus far, and I have never seen my kid more excited about his future.

Falling behind. Gap is getting bigger from many good private schools in MA, BU BC NU Tufts

Well, I guess if you compare a flagship with private schools (which all of those are), then yes — it’s not as strong; but it’s not a bad school at all. UMass is respectable, does a lot of research (and earns a lot of grant money). On top of that, my child (who currently attends UMass) is happy there and feels like he is learning a lot and has a lot of opportunities ahead of him.

+1 University of Rochester is UNDERRATED. I’m an alum.

Serious academics, great campus life, students who are well rounded and relatively lower key. U of R is particularly good if you want to go to an elite grad program after. That said I wouldn’t choose it if a) grad school wasn’t on the horizon or b) you don’t plan to live in NY State or adjacent. It’s not as well known and the name throws people off. (They should have named it Eastman University when they had the chance…)

I can’t think of one classmate who doesn’t have a successful professional career. Lots of PHDs, MDs, JDs, MBA Wall Street types, engineers, politicians, entrepreneurs etc. I always feel like the dumb one for ONLY having a Masters and a regular business-y job.

Agree and I have no skin in this game. No relatives have gone there and my kids are already in college. I find every person I hear talk about personal experience with great stories and I see great outcomes. Seems underrated to me.

I’m the original PP on St Johns and should have said the same. I went to Penn - I think I had one of my high school classmates attend 35 years ago but man I wish I had considered this school when I was young. I read somewhere they produce more PhDs per capita - with maybe the exception of Bryn Mawr.

My daughter is excited to apply to UMass! It might be because they have the best food on campus. But seriously, it seems like a nice, diverse school in a pretty setting. It's also well-regarded in her intended major. Glad to hear that you daughter really likes it!
