Did you circumcise?

Nope. It’s not medically necessary to cut off part of a baby’s penis, so why would we?
Anonymous
No, I’m not barbaric.
Anonymous
Yes, but its to late to worry about it now.
Anonymous
No.

Same here. My husband had frequent UTIs growing up and ended up being circumcised at 14, which he thought was miserable and traumatic. So we did it for our son even though not common in his culture and I was agnostic leaning no.

Wouldn't it be just as miserable for a baby, except they can't complain?

Have you ever broken a bone as a kid vs as an adult? Or had chicken pox as a kid vs an adult?

I respect people who don't believe in circumcision but the argument that you can always do it later seems ridiculous.

We did circumcise our son but it was a combination of religious/what my husband is used to

A baby’s penis isn’t broken or sick though, you just chopped part of it off because your husband had a chopped penis?

Yes as a matter of fact that is what happened. For thousands of years that has been an integral element of the community he grew up in. Not saying that the practice is beyond question but pretty much the fact that it's a well-established tradition in his family is the main reason we did it.

But even Jews don't generally do adult circumcision because they understand that it's different in many ways, which is the only point I was making. Do it or don't do it, but don't think you can easily opt in to doing 10 years down the road.

This is obviously a loaded topic and people who are anti it seem to feel a LOT more strongly about it than people who do it…as evidenced by this thread. FWIW I’m 36, grew up here, went to UVA; in my group of 15ish girlfriends - we’re moderately UMC successful professionals - everyone circumcised. This is anecdotal but my friend works at a preschool - her consensus is that most white families do it, many Hispanic families don’t

What were y'all's reasons for doing it?
Anonymous
No. I didn't chop off part of my son's penis.

Yes, all 3 of my boys were. I honestly had some reservations but DH felt more strongly about it. Ultimately, I am glad they got it done.

In my community it’s increasingly unusual. Coastal, wealthy community in California. Mixed race.

The main argument to do it is “I think uncirc’d penises are gross” which is…Freudian at best.
Anonymous
No. I don’t believe in cutting off pieces of my baby.
Anonymous
Yes. We did.

It's less "I think uncirc'd penises are gross" and more "most women (and teenage girls) think uncirc'd penises are gross, and I don't want my son to ever have to worry about getting rejected or laughed at because of a decision I made." The fact that I personally think uncircumcised penises are gross is completely irrelevant.

Yes, I know in Europe, or American neighborhoods with large Latino populations, most women don't think foreskin is gross, but considering my son is going to Langley, that's absolutely something I considered.
