I can't help but think none of this really matters. He should have to pay back all the $ to the state as a fine, but it makes no sense to stick him in jail. Who exactly did he hurt?

He hurt all the GT applicants who would have been admitted if not for those stolen seats secured through bribes.

How could you ever show that someone wasn't admitted because of these bribes? How did it hurt them, in a way that could be compensated in a court of law. Putting this guy in jail is a terrible waste of taxpayer $$.

People should not be punished with jail time unless you can point to a specific victim? That's a very odd system of justice.

Right. How about deterrence value, which is huge for white collar cases. Rich folks are terrified of jail.

You are sad that more Asian families didn’t try to use the side door (or didn’t get caught doing so)? That’s a really weird take. I’m also not understanding why you think Asian families don’t have connections, legacy status, or the ability to make large donations to colleges. Do you not know any wealthy Asian families?

Affirmative action helps all marginalized minorities.

Legacy, connections, donations, etc. are few and far between.

Plenty of groups other than asians have an uphill battle.

Uh, how about the kids in poverty who don’t have access to good schools? Their parents can’t afford the luxury of good schools, expensive ECs, etc. They are definitely disadvantaged (which is why first Gen and holistic admissions is a thing).

You are so self-pitying and myopic. Your kid will be fine.

Also keep in mind that there are other families that used Singer. The entire list has not been made public, so we have no idea which families used him. It was at least a couple hundred.

It will totally come out in time bc too many people were wronged.

Remember the Ashley Madison debacle?

Look around at the recent "sports recruits" in your local affluent suburban high school, my friends.

People be nervous now.....

The sports recruits at my kids’ affluent suburban HS are all standouts on their state championship teams or regional or national playoff winners. What would they or we be nervous about in your scenario? Most of the Singer clients did not hold themselves out as sports recruits in their local communities; instead they kept that element of the scheme very quiet.

Not really. Who will succeed in life? Legacies, connectors, donors, side-doorers, affirmative action babies - or the young, smart, beautiful go getters who still believe in their dreams?

Not all sports recruits are "standouts".

Not all sports recruits are "standouts".

All the ones I’ve met are. It’s relative, of course. D3 recruits tend to be either standouts on a lower level team or solid but not spectacular contributors to a top team. D1 recruits are objectively standouts by any measure. The recruits for individual sports all have the best times or ratings. If any of the Singer type fake recruits had advertised their alleged recruit status, there would be a huge amount of gossip in their school community as every knows what levels you need to play at to have a shot and there’s no faking it for any sport I can think of.

Definitely easier for the former.

Yes of course they MUST be beautiful!
