Name list! Weigh in and suggest please

I like Flora and Nora best, but agree Nora is super popular if that matters.

From PP suggestions I also like Anna and Cora.

Another in the 2-syllable vein but vowel sound first... Erin

These will be mispronounced more than the Nora and Flora because of confusion about long "e" vs "i" sounds:

Freya
Thea [I've known a Tay-uh and a Thee-uh and a Thay-uh all spelled like that]
Lyra
Isla
Ayla

Personally I prefer Dorothea to Theodora if you do go that route, but people may still wonder if it's Doro-tay-uh or Doro-thee-uh.

Longer than two syllables, but what about Cordelia? NN Delia or Cora.

OP here and I have also wondered about this. I think we would do Thee-uh or Tay-uh but not Thay-uh.

I was also considering Téa (it's the greek spelling and my dad's family is greek), but then we wouldn't use Theodora which was intended to honor DH's grandfather Theodore. Plus then DH said if we did Téa, people would drop or ignore the accent all the time and call her Tea (like the drink), and he's probably right.

So Thea/Theodora/Téa may be out of the running at this point. It was among my least favorite of this set, though, even though I liked that it could be a way to honor a family member and was in keeping with our current theme.

Maybe Thalia? Though I just like how the two-syllable names flow with our chosen middle and last names.

OP here. Love Willa. That is definitely going on the list. Thank you!

I also love Flora for Florence or by itself.

OP again. Loving the love for both Flora and Isla! These are definitely two of my favorites.

Tea is beautiful! I've loved that name since Tea Leoni first became well-known.

Freya: Never sure how to say it. "FRY-ah?" I think it's tough in America.

Lyra: LEE-rah? Pretty, but likely to get mispronounced.

Ayla: AY-lah? Or also pronounced EYE-lah? That's my only hesitation.

Good questions, so to clarify:

Freya is pronounced FRAY-ah. I do think it would take some getting used to for some people but it's very easy to pronounce once you know. I think it's becoming more popular in the US and we live in a pretty cosmopolitan area (lots of immigrants and people who travel a lot), so I'm not too worried about pronunciation.

Lyra would be LIE-ruh, like the main character in the Golden Compass books, which I love. Though someone else actually suggested Lyric as an alternative, and I kind of like it? I know it's a bit out there for DCUM, but DH and I are both musicians and I think it's pretty.

If we did Ayla, we would pronounce it AY-lah, not EYE-lah (if we go with the second pronunciation we will just use Isla).

Thanks for the suggestion so far! And the feedback is also appreciated, as obviously we need to rule things out as much as add to the list.

Ed Sheeran and his wife named their first DD Lyra.

I think Lyra is my favorite on the list, with Thea as a second.

But how would you pronounce them?

All fun right now, it's fine if you don't like a name but if so please suggest something you like better!

Nora
Freya
Thea (maybe short for Theodora)
Lyra
Flora (or maybe Florence and either Flora/Flory for nn?)
Isla
Ayla

... sensing a theme? We are not totally married to two-syllables or "ends with -a" but we seem to be heavily drawn to these.

I feel like you have two lists going here. Nora, Freya and Thea give me Scandinavian vibes. Lyra, Flora, Isla and Ayla are a bit more whimsical and almost musical. Were you hoping to go in one of those directions? I happen to like Freya, Thea and Flora best from your list as full names not nicknames.
I would eliminate Nora. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it, but it seems to be trending. A decent segment of my family would get tripped up pronouncing Lyra and Isla for what that’s worth.

Dora (Eudora?)

Love Isla

What about Louisa (nn Lucy)?[/quote]

np If you like Lucy why not go with Lucy? How can you get Lucy out of Louisa ( which is a fine name)

Op

Nora is very popular. I knew a Flora ( just Flora) which is just ok. Not crazy about Isla or Ayla Theodora is also cute. Nn could be "Teddy" too
