WI like MN is a liberal state that attaracted many SE Asian refugees in the past. For various reasons, these states can be very difficult for POCs.

The article cites both UW and Madison police responses.

Hardly. The city of, and the University are very progressive. There are racists everywhere, sadly.

Has anyone seen the security photo of the people who attacked the student?

A slur sometimes hurled at Asian-Americans is that they are yellow on the outside and white on the inside (hence, a banana).

I know that reference but it doesn’t seem relevant in this situation. It’s usually an insult against other Asians, but the attackers were Caucasian and black here, right?

Not exactly. Althouse has a link to the security photo - not Caucasians.

Madison police said the fifth-year doctoral student was walking in the 400 block of West Gilman Street at around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday when he was allegedly punched by a group of men. The men then kicked and punched him after he fell to the ground.

The suspects did not take anything from the victim and did not say anything to him. Police said that two similar attacks have occurred in downtown Madison over the last two weeks. All of the incidents appear to be random."

Good job. Hope the police break some bones, including that of the 15 year old. A hard lesson, early in life, is a good thing.

I had this happen to a friend at VA Tech back in the 90s. Some random A-holes jumped this guy (India guy, looked North African) late at night as he was walking back home. He was hospitalized for a week and therapy for several more. The police never found out who it was.

I noticed police catch criminals in almost all Asian-hate incidents where pictures are splattered all over the internet. It's now up to the system to lock up these criminals.

I know several Asians who've attended Wisconsin in the last 5-10 years and they've had good experiences. Please don't let this take UW off your list.

Places like Wisconsin and Minnesota have a relatively small Asian population. It's not a good place to be.

College towns are not usually representative of a whole state.

Here.

I think the only reason this got any attention at all is because people thought a couple of the attackers were white.

Hard to believe. But there it is.

Another thing we can thank Trump for.

Wisconsin needs to put criminals away to send message to international $tudents that they are valued for their RICH and vibrant contribution in addition to their $cholarship to their university.

Something doesn't add up here. The victim described the assailants as
both white and Black men who were all “very well dressed” and “very fit.”

These are hardly "very well dressed" men.

PP, you’ve probably never been assaulted by a stranger like that. I have. Your memory is really foggy. You remember some things in very fine detail and others barely at all. It would not surprise me if I’m the dark and under stress he saw the 2 lighter skinned guys as white. And I wouldn’t be stunned that he couldn’t remember their clothing. When I was assaulted, I was positive the attacker had a certain haircut. When they caught the guy, I recognized him but he didn’t have that hair cut. My mind added in that random incorrect detail.

It”s hard to imagine that even a confused person could remember any of this crew as “very well dressed”.
