‘Tonight, it’s my turn’: Chinese PhD student attacked by 5 men near University of Wisconsin-Madison

Anonymous
"The student, 26, shared his account of the incident on Weibo, which was then also translated and posted on the r/UWMadison subreddit.

The student said he was walking home along University Avenue on Tuesday night when a group of men surrounded him, struck him in the face, shoved him to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked him.

His attackers fled after he screamed for help twice, the victim said. The assault left him with a bleeding ear and multiple “spots” on his head.

The entire attack lasted no more than 40 seconds, the victim said. He described his assailants as both white and Black men who were all “very well dressed” and “very fit.”

Meanwhile, the same assailants are also accused of attacking a South Asian victim earlier that night. The incident allegedly occurred just a few blocks away from where the Chinese student was assaulted.

The incidents are now under investigation by the Madison Police Department. On Thursday, UW-Madison released a statement saying they are aware of the attacks and that campus police are cooperating with the investigation."

What a disgusting country the USA is turning into.

Very odd that hate crimes against Asians are not often covered by the MSM as crimes against other minority groups.

Hard to believe. But there it is.

I know several Asians who've attended Wisconsin in the last 5-10 years and they've had good experiences. Please don't let this take UW off your list.

Places like Wisconsin and Minnesota have a relatively small Asian population. It's not a good place to be.

This is a really weird story. Proceed with caution.

It says it was posted on Weibo. The fact that the U of Winsconsin administrators have not responded makes it even more alarming. The fact that the student has to report this in China with no resources in Wisconsin is scary.

So two victims came up with this story? Is that what some of you are saying? Asians are like missing black women (compare to pretty blonde white women). Main stream news outlets are not interested in covering. Not sexy enough.

"The recent spike of anti-Asian hate crimes is deeply disturbing,” said Steven Shi, a UW-Madison international student. “As a member of the Asian communities, I feel heartbroken.”

During the 2021-2022 school year, Asians made up nearly 8% of the student population and international students made up about 14% of the student population at UW-Madison.

Sun said she is disappointed with how local officials have responded to the safety concerns of Asian students.

“I believe both our university and police need to do more,” she said. “They need to mention more explicitly about what’s happening to Asian students.”

Sun first saw the Weibo post through a WeChat group with over 400 UW-Madison international students, many of whom said they felt angry about the violence.

“We were also shocked by this news because many international students chose UW-Madison because Madison seemed much safer than other big cities like New York City or Los Angeles,” she said. “But we know this victim was not the only Asian student who was targeted on campus.”

UW-Madison has had other recent anti-Asian bias incidents. In January, a Badgers fan was removed from a Northwestern basketball game after making racially insensitive gestures toward an opposing fan of Asian descent.

Two men were also charged with anti-Asian hate crimes this past fall in separate incidents, according to reports from the Wisconsin State Journal. Both crimes occurred on West Dayton Street near the Nicholas Recreation Center. "

What's wrong with you? There were multiple witnesses, cops were on the scene very quickly, and they are looking to review surveillance footage.

There were literally zero witnesses. Others came on to the scene afterwards. Police only speak to the victim's account, and that article is sure to "allege" throughout the whole story. It is right to be skeptical of this story.

What is up with throwing a banana at the other guy? So odd.

A slur sometimes hurled at Asian-Americans is that they are yellow on the outside and white on the inside (hence, a banana).

Yes, not to take away from the seriousness of this event, but UW Madison is not a hellhole. For many years, the University of Wisconsin had one of the highest percentage of foreign students attending of any US university, the majority of the UW foreign students were from China. When I was there as an Econ major I had Chinese TAs a number of times and there were always groups of Chinese nationals studying together in the library.
