I know several Asians who've attended Wisconsin in the last 5-10 years and they've had good experiences. Please don't let this take UW off your list.

Places like Wisconsin and Minnesota have a relatively small Asian population. It's not a good place to be.

+1. Wisconsin is a very white school. No diversity. That’s we crossed it off our list for our Asian kids.

What a ridiculously overbroad statement! I am Asian and from Wisconsin and had no issues. And NYC, LA and Atlanta have all had hate crimes against Asians. It’s not the location that is the problem; it’s the rising tide of hate and bias crimes.

The Twin Cities have the largest Hmong population in the United States and Wisconsin has a lot of Asian students. The stupidity on display on this thread isn’t a good look.

Hmongs are there bc MN is a very liberal state who attracted SE Asian refugees with its liberal programs. The refugees who settled there are very different from the DMV population demographically. A lot of Asian students in Wisconsin may be international students. Again, it's a very different population demographically from the DMV population.

The twin cities are 270 miles from Madison. That’s further than New York is from DC. So it’s not exactly relevant.

University of Wisconsin Madison is 64% white and 7% percent Asian. The state is 87% white and 3% Asian. It’s not exactly a diverse place.

I’m not sure you’re much better than the PP is perhaps you should hold off calling everyone else stupid.

64% white, means 36% non-white. 7% Asian is greater than the country as a whole. Sounds fairly diverse unless majority minority is the standard. I am Asian American and choose not to go through life with that level of fear. There have been a series of reported Asian hate crimes in NYC and San Francisco - how do you explain that through your prism where the explanation is low percent minority backwaters. This is a bad incident but being scared to live in most of the country is not a good answer.

Calm down, Princess. Who said anything about being scared? Just pointing out that Madison, Wisconsin is not a campus with a huge number of Asian students and having to drive 4 hours to the twin cities isn’t really a substitute.

A slur sometimes hurled at Asian-Americans is that they are yellow on the outside and white on the inside (hence, a banana).

I know that reference but it doesn’t seem relevant in this situation. It’s usually an insult against other Asians, but the attackers were Caucasian and black here, right?

Maybe we had the usual "dumb" attackers who didn't know the correct context and just knew it was an insult.

I went to Wisconsin and there were a lot of Asians. Your loss.

"MADISON, Wis. — Four people who police said attacked a UW-Madison Ph.D. student who was walking in downtown Madison Tuesday night were arrested Saturday. One of the suspects is 15 years old.

Madison police said the fifth-year doctoral student was walking in the 400 block of West Gilman Street at around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday when he was allegedly punched by a group of men. The men then kicked and punched him after he fell to the ground.

The suspects did not take anything from the victim and did not say anything to him. Police said that two similar attacks have occurred in downtown Madison over the last two weeks. All of the incidents appear to be random."

Choosing or not choosing Wisconsin is a matter of fit. It's not a loss or gain.

Having lots of people of Asian heritage around will not be enough to protect you from assault. All it takes is a couple of bad people who live in the area or are visiting to cause a problem.
