Why is Wotton HS district favorited by many asian family?

pressure cooker?

Depends on perspective. Kids will have to learn to handle pressure at some point. HS is an excellent time and place to learn that.

By comparison 45 years ago it was 86 percent Jewish. There was maybe 3 percent non white in total. It managed to be rated the best non magnet and non private HS in the United States and the tide changed.

It is pretty wild. The school is still amazing. But very unusual hardly any whites left and the black and Spanish kids got even less and priced out.

They win every academic award possible. But a Football team 70 percent Chinese and 30 percent Jewish is funny.

But damn plenty of good violin and piano players. Plus the Jewish temples now have plenty of seats on the high holidays

What's the name of the school

Great Neck South

Queens/Brooklyn ----> Long Island. A fascinating case study about the "American Dream."

Does mcps has a survey /database which college kids go to after graduation?

Multiple reasons. First- Asians like to be with other Asians like other groups. Look at other high schools in the area and you'll see somewhat of a similar pattern. Look at Clarksburg- tons of Indian families there. Second- Wootton has a reputation for churning out lots of college-bound kids with high GPAs and it's known as a pressure cooker which attracts some Asian families. Third- While it might not have the cachet as a W school in Bethesda or Potomac, purchasing a house in the Wootton cluster is less expensive.

The core academic offerings at all high schools in MCPS are the same with some variances in the AP classes and foreign language offerings. There are also some variances in signature and career programs. Some schools also offer IB. The MCPS website shows the graduation rate of individual schools. MCPS has one of the highest graduations rates overall in the state.

A good example is the Willows development. New development built in phases during the 1990s. lots of young Asian families purchased. Other new developments same deal, Fallsgrove is another example.

Fallsgrove is zoned for RM, not Wootton.

It can never be perfect, the but there are a couple of schools that are waaay more diverse than Wootton, and they are right next to Wootton -- RM, QO, Northwest.

Unless RM/IB, no way I am picking one of those over Wotton. Not even close.

Former resident. It’s because there is a significant cluster of Chinese churches in North Potomac. Also adult day care provided by CCACC in Gaithersburg.

You need to educate yourself about RM and stop trashing it. Given the economic diversity at RM, I'd say it is VERY close.

2019 AP scores:
Percentage of males at the school who took at least one AP exam and passed: RM (83.7%); Wootton (87.3%)
Percentage of females at the school who took at least one AP exam and passed: RM (83.9%); Wootton (86.8%)

By race:
At RM, whites and Hispanics scored higher than their counterparts at Wootton
At Wootton, Asians and African Americans scored higher than their counterparts at RM

% of AP tests with passing scores (3-5)
Wootton - 88.6%
Whitman - 88.3%
Poolesville - 87.9%
Blair - 87.1%
WJ - 86.2%
Churchill - 83.6%
RM - 81%
BCC - 78.0%

Scores at QO and Northwest were substantially lower than at Wootton and RM.

Thank you for posting this. We are zoned for Wootton but have thought about moving into the RM zone. RM's stats are very impressive.

RM parent here.. I'm sure someone will say that the RM stats are skewed by RMIB students (my kid is one), but honestly, why would that matter? It's like saying Wootton scores are skewed because all the UMC families. In cluster students can join the IB program in 11th grade (must have the grades and recs) So, really, the fact that RM has an IB magnet program is a plus.

RM is very diverse, both racially and SES, and the scores reflect that diversity. Even so, a ton of students, including non IB students, do take AP classes/tests. It's a great school, even with all the issues. Main St is awesome, and my kid loves that they get open lunch. There are so many active clubs, and the diversity means any student can find their "tribe".

If you believe this will be built anytime soon I have a bridge in Brooklyn that may interest you. Classic ignoring of middle class. Whitman got it’s second addition. Gaithersburg brand new. Nothing for this place. It is disgusting!

It’s a wealthy school. Not middle class.

Came here to say the same thing. Entitled and wealthy. When the Wootton cluster testified to the Board of Education that they were being ignored while Whitman was getting an addition it was because they were the "miserable middle-class." So clueless.

Capacity has always trumped aging buildings. Ask Lee Middle School, who had no sprinkler system for ages (massive fire hazzard). And the school with a room with a dirt floor. And Damascus. And Poolesville. Sure, Wootton was next on the list to be renovated (along with Damascus and Poolesville), when the geniuses in the Real Estate Dept pulled the rug out from under them and changed the system for renovations. There is always a school that is next to be dealt with that is in the worst shape, and many others underneath.

I feel sick from reading this thread and the incredibly ignorant and racist things said. I can't believe people are claiming there's no racism against Asians and Asian americans in MCPS and someone saying that "they move in packs." Like are you describing Asians as animals? WTH people.

DCUM brings out the worst in people.
