Totally agree. LOL.

What is wrong with someone having school spirit? It’s one of the things that make college enjoyable for most people.

DP: most of these have focused on sports related school spirit, not everyone's cup of tea. I think there are other ways to think about school spirit--like W&M doesn't have a big sports focus but the students/alum are really tied to their school and love it as an institution. That's the case at a lot of SLACs too. It's just a different kind of spirit.

Wisconsin

In addition to football (jump around and fifth quarter) their men's basketball, women's volleyball and mens and womens hockey are all "revenue" sports - ie they sell out, draw fans etc.

Most of the SEC can be counted as football schools. In the Big10, Michigan, OSU and Penn State all draw very passionate fans.

Can't belive no one has mentioned Ole Miss.

And that's totally fine. But as my kids learned at an early age, "Don't yuck someone else's yum."

And it's not just locally. DH and DS have been wearing VT shirts in CO and CA and regularly get the "go Hokies!"

I’m sorry, I really find that hard to believe. VT might have a lot of school spirit locally, but outside of this region it’s not very well known.

You find it hard to believe that VT grads live in CA and CO?

No. I just find it hard to believe that there would be many people who would say “Go Hokies” in that part of the country.

Seriously. Or that college football fans anywhere don't know VT? That was my post and I'd say we get more "go Hokies" outside of VA than in it. It is such a common thing here because there are SO many alumni that nobody comments while the VT grads/fans elsewhere are absolutely thrilled to connect over it. They really love their school.

It isn't a school. It is a football prgoram with classrooms.

I’m sorry, but college footballs fans outside this area don’t think much about VT at all.

Yes. Plus Indiana.

Nebraskan here. Agree with above, with a special asterisk* for the Longhorns and Michigan. They're in a league of their own. I've never seen so many 60 year old people walking around wearing UT or Michigan sweatshirts 1000 miles from their alma mater.

I'd add Auburn and Wake Forest and Clemson

Honestly, I think Michigan is in a league of its own when it comes to school spirited alumni. Not that there are necessarily more than any other school, but they seem to be spread out everywhere. Even in these forums, Michigan is probably talked about more than other out of state/area public university. School spirit is more than just cheering on a sport team. There is a lot of pride (many would say arrogance) with the Michigan faithful that goes way beyond football.

you are joking right? They play in a half full stadium al the time

I'm the PP you're quoting. It's not just sports. My DC is a sophmore at UCLA and the students all just really really love their school. I've spent a lot of time there and everyone wears UCLA gear and the kids are all very happy. My DC is not a big sports fan but does go to a lot of football, basketball, and hockey games (good friends are all hockey players), and it is more about the spirit, comraderie, etc. And of course the tailgating and parties! The reason the football games are often not full is because UCLA plays at the Rose Bowl and it is far from campus and a traffic nightmare to get to! Basketball games are always packed and students line up outside Pauley Pavilon all day to get a seat.

This discussion has focused on sports, but I think a general love of school is also strong school spirit.

+1 W&M is in this vein. Not a big sports schools but they are very much about their "Tribe"

Although, I think non alum where UNC and Notredame gear, but probably not the same for most other schools.
