Yes. Plus Indiana.

Nebraskan here. Agree with above, with a special asterisk* for the Longhorns and Michigan. They're in a league of their own. I've never seen so many 60 year old people walking around wearing UT or Michigan sweatshirts 1000 miles from their alma mater.

I'd add Auburn and Wake Forest and Clemson

Honestly, I think Michigan is in a league of its own when it comes to school spirited alumni. Not that there are necessarily more than any other school, but they seem to be spread out everywhere. Even in these forums, Michigan is probably talked about more than other out of state/area public university. School spirit is more than just cheering on a sport team. There is a lot of pride (many would say arrogance) with the Michigan faithful that goes way beyond football.

PP. You see much more Longhorn alum spirit outside the Amtrak corridor. It’s not that they’re runner up to Michigan, it’s that the east coast loves to spend 4-7 years in Ann Arbor before reassembling here.

West Coast and mountain state tech and energy hubs are bigger draws for expat Texans

Of the two, much easier to get into Penn State. Both have amazing alumni networks.

Penn State.

PSU alumni were one of the first (if not the first) to lobby Virginia DMV for PSU vanity plates.

Something like more alumni in Virginia than PA.

Anyway,

WE ARE!

Ohio State fans travel better than any other college fans in the Midwest. For whatever that's worth.

And it's not just locally. DH and DS have been wearing VT shirts in CO and CA and regularly get the "go Hokies!"

I’m sorry, I really find that hard to believe. VT might have a lot of school spirit locally, but outside of this region it’s not very well known.

The greeting is exchanged when someone sees another wearing school sweatshirts or whatever. And that can be anywhere in the world. NYC. LA. Switzerland. Bahamas. Morocco. India. All over. There’s a lot of school spirit. It’s not my thing, but people -including parents- help each other out with a lend-a-hand kindness it would be nice to see more places. It’s not the old boy finance network connections, more like: help my kid just took an international flight and stuck at x airport. And a parent says: DM me, we live half an hour away. They can stay here tonight I’ll go pick them up.

Among the schools that are hardest to get into, I would say Williams, Princeton and Dartmouth.

Large state flagships with good sports teams. You'll never see similar school spirit in smaller elite colleges where people love their colleges, or ivies where people feel pride for being there.

My point is that you *don't* see Michigan swag all over Los Angeles or Seattle or Park City or Phoenix. You do, however, see so much UT burnt orange.

That’s BS. Michigan has far more alumni in CA than Texas. Texas grads stay in Texas at a much higher rate.
