And it's not just locally. DH and DS have been wearing VT shirts in CO and CA and regularly get the "go Hokies!"

I’m sorry, I really find that hard to believe. VT might have a lot of school spirit locally, but outside of this region it’s not very well known.

You find it hard to believe that VT grads live in CA and CO?

No. I just find it hard to believe that there would be many people who would say “Go Hokies” in that part of the country.

Basically if you wear any college gear most places you'll run into people who have an affinity with the place--and they'll start talking to you or make some comment on it. Not sure it tells you how much school spirit a place has though.

Yes. Plus Indiana.

Nebraskan here. Agree with above, with a special asterisk* for the Longhorns and Michigan. They're in a league of their own. I've never seen so many 60 year old people walking around wearing UT or Michigan sweatshirts 1000 miles from their alma mater.

I'd add Auburn and Wake Forest and Clemson

You can go close 1000 miles from Austin and still be in Texas! Just kidding.

Best line

you are joking right? They play in a half full stadium al the time

I'm the PP you're quoting. It's not just sports. My DC is a sophmore at UCLA and the students all just really really love their school. I've spent a lot of time there and everyone wears UCLA gear and the kids are all very happy. My DC is not a big sports fan but does go to a lot of football, basketball, and hockey games (good friends are all hockey players), and it is more about the spirit, comraderie, etc. And of course the tailgating and parties! The reason the football games are often not full is because UCLA plays at the Rose Bowl and it is far from campus and a traffic nightmare to get to! Basketball games are always packed and students line up outside Pauley Pavilon all day to get a seat.

This discussion has focused on sports, but I think a general love of school is also strong school spirit.

+1 W&M is in this vein. Not a big sports schools but they are very much about their "Tribe"

Agreed. Lots of friends/relatives are W&M grads, and they're got absurdly strong school spirit. Decorations, sweat shirts, class rings etc. I've also noticed that in ND alums.

Just about any state flagship in the Big10 or SEC is going to meet this criteria.

Although, I think non alum where UNC and Notredame gear, but probably not the same for most other schools.

Yes, you have a whole subset of ND subway alum who never attended, but love the school.

It isn't a school. It is a football prgoram with classrooms.

The most visible part of most large public universities when viewed from high above are the athletic facilities.

Let’s frame it as school affection, not rah-rah spirit. In that case, I would say Princeton and Dartmouth. A measure? Alumni giving. Engaged, happy, and loyal students give back to their school. Another measure? Legacy applications. A lot of Ivy legacies want their kids to apply to their school.

I posted the earlier response. Just following up with some numbers. USNWR claims that Princeton has the number one two-year alumni giving rate, which is 55%. Dartmouth is ninth at 44%. The average college rate is 8%.

William and Mary has the highest alumni giving rate among public schools.

Penn State and U of Michigan. Just look at the size of the football stadiums that are packed every weekend. We visited both, and the Penn State kids wore the most school swag of any school we visited. And the Big House speaks for itself.

Of the two, much easier to get into Penn State. Both have amazing alumni networks.
