Do you still buy Lilly Pulitzer?

Anonymous

The quality has gone way down hill- now really only cute on little girls in pigtails and bows on vacation. Those neons even look dated on tan sorority girls. I do think there is a summer/resort wear market not being met for the 45 plus woman. Need something a bit hipper than Brooks Brothers or Talbots but not as twee as Lilly/Kate Spade. I would love some knee length pique sheaths in solid colors with maybe some bright trim. Or a flattering sleeveless stretch poplin fit and flare shirt dress that is midi length, belted with a voluminous skirt- not some limp crap with a tie belt and gaping buttons at the bust. I want summer dresses you can either wear with a regular bra or a t- strap bra.

Agree on the dive in quality. I used to wear a lot of Lilly in the summertime, there are usually one or two prints each year that I really love, but much of it is garish nowadays. I still have many of my older pieces from the early 2000s and they are far better quality than today’s stuff. The early 2000s pieces I have seen as decently made as my real vintage that my grandmother gave me. The current stuff is lacking and far to expensive for the subpar quality.

I have a couple of the popovers that faded terribly within one season with only gentle washing, and never in the dryer.

Really?

What do locals wear? I think the prints are very beachy and fun and nowdays it’s hard to find anything cute under $100, so the sale is great…

Buy and wear, if you like it! I agree that the prints are fun and cheerful.

I bought a maxi dress for a casual summer wedding last year, and it was perfect.

Same. We just got back from Palm Beach. Lots of people wearing Lily. Hard to imagine that there are many areas more "rich" than PB...

Palm Beach is just retirees. The average age is more than 70 years old. They were literally all NJ housewives 5 years ago. Or still are for half the year (keeping a foot in florida to avoid state income taxes....). They are for all intents and purposes tourists, not Floridians. Citing PB as proof that people in Florida wear LP pretty much proves the point of the first PP above. If that's the rich florida look you are going for, you be you.

DP. You're blowing smoke out of your patootie. But you go on being you. When you can afford to go to Palm Beach, or any place else, then let us know.

I can happily report that there was plenty of Lily in Miami when we were there in November. Are you going to claim that Miami is filled with NJ housewives who are more than 70 years old? Really?

I’m the PP you’re responding to. Before living in my current Florida city for the last five years, I lived on Miami Beach for ten years. I had a very, very active social life with women late 20s, 30s and 40s. I literally never saw a woman wearing Lilly Pulitzer in Miami proper a single time. Ever in ten years. Maybe you were in Kendall. Or pinecrest. More likely you were at the lowes on Miami Beach, which I ran by every morning for ten years on my beach run and frequently saw New Jersey housewives behind the metal fence wearing LP. Maybe that’s what you were thinking.

But I don’t think you should be arguing this case against a longtime Florida resident based on your spending a week at a resort in Pb and a weekend at a hotel in Miami.

Yes, trying to be attractive, cool and age appropriate in Summer is often depressing. If you’re lucky you’ll grow older and face similar sartorial challenges someday.

I’m 45ish. Still have some older pieces from the 90s that I wear and I buy new dresses occasionally. It reminds me of summer and that makes me happy.

I'm 46 y/o and you wouldn't pay me to wear it, and we have a FL home. It's for older ladies, like 60+. Us, middle age ones, wear DVF, Rebecca Taylor, vintage J Crew, Tory B, Boden. The youngsters, like my DS1's gf, wear Farm Rio, Zimmermann, Rag&Bone, All Saints.
