Will APS teachers allow sick or quarantined kids to dial in?

VDOE has already put out guidance for schools to provide meaningful remote learning options for kids in quarantine. I’m not sure it will happen right on Monday, though. I’m sorry your daughter has to quarantine and I hope she stays well.

Virginia really sucks. They won't let schools just go virtual when needed, but are making you all do this piecemeal class by class quarantine instead? Yet they insist that you teach in person AND provide meaningful instruction for the quarantined kids? If schools are open for in person instruction, then that's how teachers are providing instruction. If kids aren't in class, they just have to miss class. That's the way it always was in the past when kids were out for the flu or a bad cold, right?

A pandemic with a new variant with an extremely high transmissibility rate which is going to cause large numbers of kids to be quarantined st the same time is not a "flu or a bad cold," so no, "they just have to miss class" isn't going to cut it. Sorry.

LOL, I love parents on DCUM. Somehow I’m sure you won’t be satisfied. They may just have to miss class, and yet all will be fine.

You must have elementary school kids. Otherwise you’d understand the implications of 10 days of lost learning being reflected on high school transcripts.

DP
Isn't it 10 days if you test positive or if you are an unvaccinated close contact?

Not anymore… 5 days now, unless you’re still sick after that. I think.

It has not yet changed in schools. 10 days at this time.

Nope, HS senior who knows how to check Schoology, access KhanAcademy and the internet to get answers to questions.

No, you’re incorrect. Duran sent an email just this week about the change. “ New CDC Guidelines for Quarantine Following Exposure: On Dec. 27, the CDC provided an update reducing the recommended quarantine period from 10 days to five days for fully vaccinated individuals and revised the definition for full vaccination. APS will adhere to the new guidelines, and we have posted a graphic outlining the revised procedures online. To be considered fully vaccinated under the new guidelines, individuals must have received a booster in addition to the two initial doses of vaccine, if it has been more than six months since they received their second dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or if it has been more than two months since receiving the J&J https://www.apsva.us/school-year-2021-22/health-safety-information/contact-tracing-quarantine-isolation/

Actually they are right, the new guidelines take affect 1/3.

Anonymous wrote:as an APS teacher, I have heard nothing of letting kids dial in. I dread having to revert back to hybrid - that was miserable and nobody could get the hang of it. at this point I'm just posting every single word I say and every assignment on Canvas and am going to be crazy flexible with assignments. I don't know what else I could do.

Then you have not been reading the guidelines. I set up my camera and my students quarantining followed my
lessons. It was one way but at least they didn’t miss instruction. They emailed me assignments for feedback.

Thank you for this information!! Can you tell me more? My DD is a high schooler and will be quarantining on Monday and Tuesday. Should we email the teachers this weekend to ask them to turn on cameras and send us a link? Is that how this works?

Being out just 2 days doesn’t give kids access to “quarantine work” I think it starts after 3 days out.

Wow! This is a ton of teachers out. I wonder if we’ll be moving to virtual soon—that more than 50% of classroom trigger.

Unlikely. School will stay open, come hell or high water. I’m guessing it’ll be hell…

I think it would be wise to be prepared for individual school closures- if a school hits a certain % of teachers out, they will have either close or go virtual if teachers are healthy enough to teach. Like they literally will not be able to function without enough adults in the building.
