I was thankful the nursing staff was focused on helping us heal and not making sure you had a cozy dinner for two and luxury linens. Your priorities are seriously screwed up.

Is it overkill to look for a hospital with a private suite, reasonable food, nice thoughtful touches and/or any gifts thrown in for baby and mom? Some hospitals in Virginia do this without asking. If I'm going to foot the bill, I don't want to pay a bunch of money to be treated like a prisoner guarded by wardens behind bars. Sorry to anyone who had a negative experience during childbirth - had no intention of drudging up bad memories for you.

I have been grateful for my past experiences at Anne Arundel and Shady Grove. I just wanted to hear if other hospitals in the area had nice amenities. So as for anyone's disdain, you can take it right back. I won't feel ashamed for asking. If I was looking for flowers, a tummy tuck, and a photoshoot with perfectly done hair, I would go to Paris, Norway, Sweden, etc. I'm a stay at home mom working a full time professional job remotely while caring for 3 boys and Mommy is genuinely thankful for all the breaks she can get.

I'm sorry that some of you feel the way you do. As for me, I'll keep focusing on the positives and the silver linings wherever found.

Cheers!

Asking stuff like which hospitals have private rooms and decent food is reasonable. Asking which hospitals have luxury amenities, celebratory meals and gifts for mom and baby is ridiculous. The poor overworked hospital staff is not in the hospitality business. Please do not go to a hospital and act like you’ve come for a spa weekend.

Do any of the local hospitals not have private maternity rooms?

This is a good question. Besides excellent medical care, this is what I really want. Good food will
be a plus but I was so hungry after my first that whatever they gave me seemed great.

I didn’t need a fancy setup (I delivered my second at GW lol) but honestly the two days off from toddler parenting and cooking and cleaning were great. If you have a good sleeper (and/or there’s a nursery available) by all means enjoy the vacation. 🤪

I'm currently a patient at GW and my OB makes it seem like it'd only be for medically necessary reasons to use the nursery; was that the case with you?

When I gave birth (three weeks ago so pre omicron surging like crazy) they weren’t discouraging it for me and while I was very tired I definitely didn’t need it for medical reasons. Not sure if that’s changed in the intervening weeks but at least at my delivery they would have taken my child to give me rest if I’d wanted/needed it. (I ended up with a good sleeper this time so I didn’t ask in the end.)

Thanks! Congrats on the newborn! We are first time parents so I think we’ll be pretty overwhelmed and could use the short reprieve with the nursery. Other logistics question, what did you do about parking? Grateful for any other advice you may have too.

The nursery was absolutely a godsend for my first tbh. Even when she was sleeping I couldn’t get any rest because I was so keyed up suddenly being responsible for this tiny human’s life. I hope your nurse helps you take advantage so you can get a few hour’s sleep!

As for parking, hoping someone else can chime in? I don’t own a car so I took the metro to the hospital this time and a friend picked me up on the way home so I honestly have no idea what goes on with parking.m

My only other advice is: order lots of food! New parenting is hard work and the portions are smallish. The entire nursing staff is wonderful; don’t be afraid to ask them questions or for help. Good luck and congratulations to you! I’m sure you’ll be wonderful parents!

Wanting to pay extra for gifts is weird to me. Like yes, you can pay $5k extra for some Aden & anais swaddle blankets. But why not just buy them yourself off Amazon?

Get off your high horse. I'm the sibley PP and my first was premature and in the NICU. I can still appreciated a private clean nice room and having edible meals for me and DH.

Second baby didn't have any med issues and it was really nice to have the big room for the 3 of us, esp during covid when we didn't leave the room at all for 4 days.

OP isn't saying this is all she cares about.

Don’t know but it’s not GW.

This. I had the smallest, darkest room at GW for what ended up being a 4 day stay with my first. 2nd kid I paid for the VIP suite. We did have a lovely view of the traffic circle and more space. I had a slightly nicer menu and nurses were attentive - but it was not luxurious at all. They did give me a beautiful flower arrangement and a potted peace Lily to take home. We also got some pretty pictures of me holding my baby next to the large window.

I delivered twice at GW and had a private room for L&D as well as recovery both times. I’ve never heard of any friends sharing a room at Sibley it mmm or VHC - a better question is what local hospitals Don’t have private rooms?

As a mother of 4, I feel you.

Here’s what others don’t realize: luxury matters.

The women in the know do this:

-Pack luxury bed linens.
-Arrange a chef to drop off meals at the appointed time.
-Line up your florist ahead of time for an elegant arrangement.
-Contract with a reputable photographer, makeup artist, hairdresser, etc. for the hospital photos. Don’t forget to arrange for a “birthday” cake and champagne.
-I hope you’ve already consulted with a plastic surgeon to coordinate the tummy tuck with your scheduled c-section.

You had me until makeup artist.

There is a big difference between wanting a private clean room with edible food and wanting luxury amenities, gifts, etc. like the OP is looking for.
