Deep dive into the hindu vote in northern Virginia

My neighbors in Silver Spring just recently went house hunting in Texas! They are both in tech and can telework. They are ready to hightail it out of MoCo and I cannot blame them. Both are not Hindu, because one spouse if from Sri Lanka, but just an example.

When driving there, I wonder if they had the same experience I did. Pulling off the highway and seeing two motels, one with a big sign: AMERICAN OWNED. Stopping at the other and it's run by an Indian family.

Most likely they are immigrants who came here legally. (Versus undocumented immigrants)

Unfortunately, the Democrats often choose to lump legal immigrants and undocumented immigrants all into one big boat labeled ‘Immigrants’.

I have zero political experience, but I think the Republicans could hugely capitalize on this sentiment if they choose to. It is likely a large group of untapped votes.

The previous administration attempted to severely curtail legal immigration.

If republicans have to choose between legal immigrants and their xenophobic base, they will choose the base every time

And, if Democrats have to chose between illegal immigrants and American citizens, they will choose the undocumented immigrants every time

It doesn't surprise me that a lot of people of Indian descent vote Republican now. I think we are considered white-adjacent and can have a seat at the table along with those of Latino descent (a very diverse group.)

I DO love this country. Which is why I can't support anything the GOP is doing. These are not the behaviors of a democratic nation.

So you don't like the progressives? Fine, that's politics. People have been bickering about it for the history of the country. But when the bedrock of the country is being assaulted, I can't vote for any of them, no matter how much it affects me personally.

Yeah, and I see it totally differently. I see the progressive Democrats actually trying to divide us and putting into practice polices that destroy our middle class communities.

And I also truly believe in balance of power. Too many progressives in charge, and you end up like Montgomery County. With no opposing voices to be heard. It’s a disaster.

Absolutely! Keeps things in check.

Progressives are the Trumpians of the left.

Sorry I have to look at the larger issue of the country they are growing up in. It's the cancer I'm worried about. I'll get the warts treated later. I think a generation will pass before I consider voting GOP again.

In some ways (many ways!) the progressives scare me so much more than the Trumpians. The progressives aren’t afraid to stomp on our rights in the name of ‘safety’ or in the name of the ‘public good’ and squash free speech with their cancel culture.

We see what happens in China. Most Indians value a free press and value democracy. I’ll happily take the messiness of a democratic country. The progressives absolutely have communist tendencies. We can really see that now with Covid!

I look at policies. And I look at what Trump actually did while in office versus what the Democrats are doing in Montgomery County. I’d take Trump any day over Elrich. To me, Elrich is a million times worse and more hypocritical than Trump.

Not sure what your point is here. I see nothing wrong with a hotel advertising that they are American Owned. The Indian owned motel can advertise that is is Indian Owned to attract Indian tourists who would prefer that. Or Indian-American owned if they care to do so.

The bubble tea place by me advertises in Chinese to presumably attract Chinese customers. GWU had a list of Black Owned businesses on its website for people to support.

Do you have any issue with those? Why the hypocrisy and criticism towards an American Owned sign?

And I see the progressives as a cancer. They are insidiously eating away at the very values that have made the US such an awesome country. I don’t see the GOP doing that, so they have my vote for the foreseeable future.

You're right: the AMERICAN OWNED motel was advertising to people who want AMERICAN OWNED. Good thing we're not teaching any critical theory in schools!

That can't because doing so would alienate the large portion of their base that doesn't like immigration of any kind. You say Democrats lump all immigrants together. Well, so do Republican voters.

??? Again, your post makes no sense.

Yep!

I’m Hindu-American and I have family in both Texas and Florida. They LOVE it there. The weather, the community, the schools.

As long as your kids can go to private school, right?

DP (not the one who asked which school system)

It’s telling that the PP didn’t answer your question. I am willing to bet the house that she sends her kids to private school.

I have a super liberal, progressive Indian-American mom friend in MoCo. Always posting on FB about her love for Kamala Harris. She sends her kids to private schools.

So, her attitude is that she votes for Democratic politicians and policies that have destroyed the school system. But, who cares. Her kids are fine because she can afford private. Basically? Her kids deserve ‘school choice’ and the rest of us peons are stuck with the crappy, overcrowded, Democrat-controlled public school system.

I mean, my kids will likely be fine. I’m not stupid. My kids have been enrolled in Spider Smart since K. But, I can see how the Democrat policies are eating away at the middle class and destroying what used to be a fairly nice, safe, comfortable place to live. No thanks.

No I didn't answer the question. I'm usually conservative in what I type online. Not private. My kids have been stagnating in pubic elem. for a while, but they'll be okay. They have their parents to help them. Voted GOP for a while in the 90's and early 2000's. Could see that the types of politicians I admired were now pariahs in the current GOP.
They aren't for me anymore.

Whether you are in MoCo or Fairfax, wait until your kids get to MS and HS. It’s easy to fill in the gaps in elementary school. By MS and HS, we see plenty of ‘progressives’ fleeing MCPS.

We’re sticking with private (like I said, I’m an under-achieving Indian-American, so private is an expensive option for us), but have seen what happens with the older kids. Especially now that the Democrats are trying to actively dismantle the magnets.

It’s funny because I used to vote almost exclusively Democrat. But, in this case, I have become aware that they are not for me anymore either!
