This was her natural look as a teen. I believe her ancestry is not just Italian, but Sicilian, which means her ancestors probably come from all over the Mediterranean world. Americans are really inconsistent about whether North Africans and Levantines are "white" or "brown" (it seems to change according to whatever point they're trying to make from one moment to another,) but she probably has ancestors from both those places as well as Europe.

Apparently her DNA test showed that she's "heavily Greek and part North African." She seems not to understand enough about Sicilian history to know those results actually encapsulate a whole lot of it: https://twitter.com/arianagrande/status/454407790602104832?lang=en

This is probably pretty normal for southern Italy and Sicily in particular.

Yeah. I mean it's like Spanish people have Moor heritage but theyre almost all white (or considered white). It's outrageous how she's repeatedly tried to shift her features to correspond to whatever is big in music at the time, be it trying to look latina or even black and now apparently asian with the rise of kpop.

She needs to get some therapy or something and stay away from the plastic surgeon's office before she looks like MJ.

a) At least most of what you're discussing is make-up and costuming
b) My point was that "white" and "brown" don't stand up to scrutiny

a) It's certainly not and you truly sound like you might have vision or spatial processing issues if you think that change is "makeup and costumery". I mean, GIRL...
b) Not really. Everyone knows the difference between a white person and a brown person, for the most part. Ariana is firmly in the white camp, no ambiguity. And she needs to accept it.

She’s done some PS for sure, but I don’t think it’s deliberately to “look Asian.” She seems to be going for more the Khloe Kardashian, Hadid sisters look with the eyebrow lift to create more upturned eyes vs. round eyes. The rest can be achieved with makeup and Photoshop/retouching.

This. Plus her high ponytail is so tight, it stretches out not only her eyes, but her entire face.

The important thing to note is that the woman can actually sing. You may or may not like her appearance or her songs, but there is no denying she has talent.

I think the very Asian pic is mostly makeup.

Everyone online is pointing out that the pics in question were heavily photoshopped/altered a la Khloe K (who looks like an entirely different person in social media vs IRL).

Ariana has bad skin irl. If you see a closeup with smooth skin, it’s photoshopped/filtered.

She's definitely Chinese now.

Then she gradually morphed into a black or mixed facade and I was like WTF. Now this. K pop is the new wave, J pop hasn't quite gained as much traction, but either way she's just latching into a new identity. I don't understand how anyone thinks this is ok.

She’s an Italian-American from Florida lol

Yeah I went to school with her (same school, not same class) and she was white. lol

Her Koreanesque pics were very odd - could it be imitation is the highest form of flattery? I'd defer to what Koreans think, not wypipo here.

I saw some other pics posted, didn't seem to be appropriating other cultures. She was really tan 24/7 for years and years. She is from South Florida and I think Sicilian. It seems almost odd now if she is pale.

The surgery she actually did probably get was early in her singing career - an excellent nose job and possibly eyebrow lift, not sure if maybe blepharoplasty too. Just compare her Disney teen pics to like 2019.

This is silly. She obviously used some software to look different.

Exactly. Just makeup, photoshop and filters.
