Reinstate School Resource Officers at MCPS

It was too easy for schools and SROs to sweep things under the rug. Get some of these violent kids out of schools and into detention or prison.

The atmosphere surrounding our schools is quite toxic nowadays. And your wish won't come true for sure.

Started from 2015, disciplining a disproportional number of black and hispanic students was discouraged. Then, arresting a disproportional number of black and hispanic people was also not favored.

Do we want teachers, admins, or security guards to handle stabbings? guns? Or handling strong and violent students?

Those people from county PTA, teacher union, or other leadership pushing for dropping the number of disciplining and arresting cases have been celebrating their success. In reality, they have simply made the learning environment harder to manage.

Recently, there are a number of local and nation wide violence attacks against students. Here are two quick examples.

It sounds the time to put our student safety first.

Thanks,

Nobody is buying this. Seriously, just cater to your police union members and stop posting here.

That’s because the pro -SRO crowd fail to say that cops are required to be close to the school just not in it.

Where was the cop parked during the Churchill knife incident that it took him 15 minutes to get there, Tysons?

Is this that SRO non-sense?

I support Elirch and Jawando. They seem to be handling these things fine without the prison guards at school.

Sounds that both of you are hungry for blood in schools. Hiking homicides in big cities demonstrated what will happen in a dense community w/o sufficient law enforcement. It is a pity that most of MC and MCPS leaders do not live in the communities with high crime rates nor attend a high school. Complete senseless.

Cops don't stop crime in schools. If you want fast response put them in the parking lots waiting for a call.

This. Studies show that they actually cause more problems particularly with younger children.

Don't worry since that is what's happening now. Now the principals and staff are calling the cops even over situations that the SROs previously handled or could have mitigated on their own. That's why there are more calls to cops regarding assaults at school in these past 2.5 months alone than all of 2019-2020. So much for preventing the school-to-prison pipeline. You can thank Jawando, Elrich, and the rest of the County Council for that one. Oh, and you can also thank these loonies for adding extra burden on the already overworked MCPS staff to take on the duties of SROs.

It’s rather ironic really. The council is so out of touch I don’t think they had any idea what the SROs actually did. Now the schools have to call in police officers that have little familiarity with the school and students who attend.

That's what cops do. They don't need to be familiar with the place/situation to do their job. The security guards and school admin are familiar with the school and the kids.

So was the parkland officer that ran away from the shooter also familiar with their school?

Seems like they're doing a fine job addressing the many incidents that have recently happened without SROs. This makes me believe they did the right thing getting rid of them.

+1 million

It is a nightmare for administrators who are actually IN schools and who actually do care about kids’ safety.

It was an SRO, so being familiar with the school or not is irrelevant. That was the point

If it’s the normal SRO … I’d guess asleep.
