Penn State

I went to PSU (and didn’t get into UMD). My husband went to UMD and didn’t get into PSU. Just sharing for reference.

We both had amazing college experiences and are very successful in our careers as adults. That being said, if $ isn’t a deciding factor, I would visit both and let your child choose based on the visit.

Excellent response, PP!

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why PA will swing GOP in 2024.

What in the world does this have to do with politics?

This is cancel culture. It's a real thing that real people hate. And too many liberals just can't help themselves.

While a student committing to attend today has absolutely nothing to do with what happened, you certainly can't gloss over and forget what happened either. We're talking about an institutional cover up of child rape in the name of protecting a football program. The president of the school at the time is currently in prison. This isn't a liberal or conservative thing. Im certain that there are many conservatives who are just as disgusted with what happened as with liberals. Not a fan of cancel culrure either, but PSU made its own bed here.

Incarcerating child rapists and their facilitators has broad bipartisan support (save when the rapist in question is a Republican elected official, of course), but "PSU would not be allowed" is absolutely a liberal thing. And telling all Penn State alumni (a million-plus?) that their most treasured institutional connection is fatally tainted because of something they didn't do and couldn't control is a great way to alienate them.

And we all know how “good” a school is by their ranking. Please.

As a (liberal) Penn State alum, I agree with this. I wouldn’t give them a dime after the Sandusky scandal, and I certainly wouldn’t let my children attend. It’s a rotten institution, and I say that after having had a very positive experience in the Honors College there.

#59 (UMD) and #63 (Penn State) out of 400 ranked schools on USNWR and out of the 4,000 schools in the US. Hardly mediocre. OP, they are both great schools. I’d pick whichever feels right when you’re there.

I didn’t realize PSU had dropped that much at USNWR.

I think the reality is that we all have sinned, or could sin. Penn State got caught, but plenty of other places must have had worse problems that weren’t caught. We should base current decisions on current circumstances and hope that we and our children have the wisdom to avoid and prevent similar problems.

I hadn't realized it was remotely that high. Crappy cult school.

The story about the freshman that will killed in the fraternity rush event also lingers for me. Those poor parents.

Both are solid schools academically. I would make the decision based on money.
