Penn State

My DD got an acceptance letter for Penn State. Where does Penn state rank and how good is the school? My question is UMD versus Penn state, which one would you choose. My DD is not very sure what she wants to do, sometimes talk about interest in biology....

If you live in MD, go to UMD. The cost difference is huge.

They are both excellent schools. If you live in MD go to UMD unless PSU offers money or you have money to burn.

OP, try Googling the schools for rankings and comparisons. Also, check out student’s comments on unigo in addition to getting feedback here.

UMD

No significant difference in quality between the two programs - If she explicitly wanted to go premed I’d choose Penn State but if not I’d choose UMD.

The schools are roughly equivalent. Barring a strong preference for one campus over the other (and I'd press pretty hard on what was animating such a preference), I'd make a $$ decision.

If money is not an issue, Penn State.
UMD is so depressing. State College is lovely.

The students at UMD have stronger academic profiles (GPA/SATs) than Penn State. Penn State is a more classic college town. Both are reasonably solid academically.

Kids with good, but not great stats, may not get into UMD, but within my small circle of friends I've heard that they do get into Penn State.

yeah, I don't think Penn State even has the hold on central PA that it once had. It is definitely harder to get into Maryland than into Penn State. Also, Penn State continues to have a big problem with having very little diversity.
