Why isn’t Penn State a great choice? My DC was admitted and we loved the school when we toured.

I would like to know the same thing. People just throw out these accusations but fail to elaborate on the specifics. I would like to know why many people hate Penn State. I don't have a dog in this fight, but I know some great people who have graduated from Penn State.

Because it's a football cult masquerading as a university.

My DS is a sophomore at Penn State (main campus), and he likes the school. He did not get admitted to the U of Maryland.

In terms of the academics, there is a lot of competition to get admitted into the most desired majors -- in Engineering and in the Smeal School of Business. My son is not in those majors, but feels like he's getting a good education.

A lot of the students are from Pennsylvania. It's their primary in-state option.

As an OOS student, the cost of attendance is approximately $50,000 per year. (Of that $37,000 is tuition, and $13,000 is room/board.)

It's a pretty campus, and it's about 190 miles from the DC area. There are a lot of students from the DMV who are students there.

State College is a small college town in the middle of the state. (On the plus side, the off-campus apartments are nice new luxury buildings, presumably because land is more available in a small town, than in a city.) The airport is small, and the air service is primarily to LGA or PHL.

It's a large university, and so you have tons of options for majors, clubs, types of friends, etc. There are students there from all 50 states and around the world.

Many posters on DCUM will be critical, but it's just a big state university trying to educate a bunch of kids.

When I think about the whole Sandusky affair, you know honestly it could have happened at any big state school — football obsessed fans defiantly protesting the removal of a coach who turned a blind eye to a child rapist. But there’s something about that experience that changes the school. Before you think, gosh maybe we could become a mindless mob that excuses just about anything for the sake of our football program? But now there’s no doubt anymore. Go Nittany Lions.
