I won’t. Previous poster CCES parent. I am totally okay with this. And my kid is super into the run for a cause thing they are doing - she and her friends have been talking about it the last two weeks, debating why the causes are important to them and deciding what they want to choose. You may also be against the new social skills curriculum, OP, but this is what it’s about - healthy debate and discussion. I personally think it’s amazing - and am so much prouder yo hear my kid debating these issues than whether to be a princess or a cat. SMH.

+2 and my kids will happily wear her costume to the fall festival.

Bullshit. The flyer said Halloween is cancelled. There is no fall festival. Also not everyone wants to be a cause. It’s offensive.

Halloween is on SUNDAY a neighborhood EVENING event. Not cancelled at all.

Halloween is October 31st, a Sunday. Your school cancelled nothing. You are not entitled to costumes, candy and parties during public school and if the administration chooses to have them, they can be Fall Festivals.

Please get some actual problems.

Yes and so did my kids. Attended town parade and trick or treated in the neighborhood. I don’t recall school being a part of it for any of us. Stop trying to cause mayhem in your child’s life. Go find Halloween I can tell you Takoma Park has a monster bash and many neighborhoods have great decorations and candy. Grow up and teach your kid to go find what they want.

+1

Many schools have actually canceled Halloween, OP. When my now middle schooler was in elementary school, her principal ended what was apparently a many years long tradition of having a Halloween parade and parties in favor of fall parties that were to have zero mention of Halloween. Many parents who had older kids go through the school were angry over the parade - I was just glad Target started selling party supplies with fall leaves on them so we could avoid the "no jack o lantern" rule.

I work in an elementary school and I agree costumes are a huge pain to get in and out of, and not all kids have costumes to participate in. Chevy Chase is also still having Halloween parties in class, they're just doing the fun run instead of a costume parade - and there is a PTA sponsored costume event that weekend.

No, once again, schools cannot “cancel Halloween,” as Halloween occurs outside of school hours.

Running doesn't actually help causes.

Why doesn’t your kid do this some other day on their free time and why don’t you get off your high horse.

Why doesn't your kid celebrate Halloween on Sunday, October 31, on their free time?

This. Cancel Halloween if you want, but keep this sh&t out of schools. Most of these non-profits are actually making big money. Virtue signaling at its finest, I guess.

I disagree with doing the political causes thing at school and i also disagree with doing halloween at school. Leave that for after.

I suspect the OP is complaining largely because she doesn't like the principal. Which is understandable. She's a polarizing personality.

I think they did the wear a color for a cause thing when my kid was there a couple years ago, during spirit week. My kid refuses to do any of the spirit week days on principal -- except for PJ day, because he thinks every day should be PJ day. I was a little concerned he would be socially shamed for not picking a cause to support (remember the Seinfeld episode where Kramer won't wear the ribbon?), but I think it was okay. It does strike me as a little odd to pressure people to pick a cause .... maybe they want to support multiple causes? This seems stressful for 8 year olds. I generally think all the spirit day things, except for PJ day, are more stressful for kids than fun.

Especially in elementary school. That’s ridiculous.

Six year olds should ‘pick a cause’? Not appropriate.

Fine if they want to do this in MS.

Why is she even still in that position?

How can we complain to her boss?

Sean P. McGee is her boss: Sean_P_McGee@mcpsmd.org

Stop stirring the pot. Are you aware of how overworked and stressed our Principals are (with low staffing, etc)? School employee

CCES Alum Parent here. She is a nutcase and Sean McGee has heard plenty of complaints over the years. Low staffing and stress isn’t a get out of jail free excuse card when you do something stupid.

Here is a list of approved “causes”. Of course causes include politics.

I’m sorry- “approved” causes?
