| Don't bite my head off, but what "supplemental training" does Joga offer? I thought that club focused on a few teams in the U10-U13 age groups. Has it become less of a club and more of a training company these days? |
That is correct. From my understanding they are going to focus mainly on training and taking players overseas. |

Anybody here have experience with Joga as training goes? Or Golden Boot for that matter?
I can recommend HP Elite for any middle to advanced player. A low skilled player would be lost in their drills and likely not get as much out of it since the drills are player-driven. |
When my daughter trained with HP Elite several years ago, he didn't accept low skilled players, and even mid skilled players might not have been accepted for their training sessions. You couldn't just sign up, he had to see the player to determine if they'd be able to keep up, and he'd turn them away if not. I'm not sure if they still operate that way or not. |

So HP Elite does there training at nZone and has Friday night sessions (Shooting Finishing) and Saturday night sessions (Footskills) for like $20/hr. I heard it is very good.
Joga now goes by SMI, Inc. They do not have teams anymore. It's strictly training. The training is Friday nights and Saturday mornings. They have different packages. Probably most expensive package is $15/hr. They train over near Patriot Park. I heard the training is hit or miss. I heard a lot of the kids that played on the actual Joga teams last year went to Arlington this year. The goal apparently is to provide year round supplemental training and take groups of kids to Europe in the summer to play some scrimmages and get that experience. My son has done a Golden Boot camp in the summer and it was a lot better than I expected. However, I don't know anything about longer term training with them. |
A handful of the Joga-trained kids also went to Bethesda. I think the training may have deteriorated. At least that's what I hear. Anyone have experience with the training firm called Soccer the Brazil Way (or something like that)? |
|
HP Elite is on the pricey side, and they didn't need to see my son to accept him. I just told them the team he played on. It was over the summer.
STBW is something I'd like to know more about, I checked out their website already in case anybody wants to post a link. I'm looking for reviews. Wouldn't it be great if we had a yelp style website for soccer training, and clubs!!!!!(I can dream) |

Who wants to play the "Brazil way" nowadays? Might be time to move to the Spanish or German way...
Would be interested in knowing what you consider as the best summer camps in the area. Any of them worth, in terms of coach and participating player levels, the high prices tags? |
They made the Arlington Development Academy team over the in-house red team Arlington players. I heard the ones too young for Development Academy went over to Bethesda and Alexandria (not Arl) depending where their home base is. |
OMG. Too funny. Bet the founders are wishing they hadn't chosen that name nowadays. Pretty sure Burke has used them (STBW) before. Maybe someone from BAC could give us their opinion. Re camps -- we have done Bethesda Soccer Club camp this summer and UK Elite camps. Both great. I have heard good things about Golden Boot camps and the Barcelona camp. Pricey is subjective of course, but yes, in my world, all are pricey. (When I was a kid summer meant you ran around the neighborhood all day for free.) |
I think that's why a couple of weeks back on one of these posts people were so upset on how Arlington was taking outsiders over those that had been with the program for many years. The thing is that anyone can try-out anywhere and from my understanding the Joga kids were at try-outs at all the big clubs. Clubs are going to pick those players that are the best and sometimes it involves taking players from outside the club. The issue with that is that it makes the local parents really consider on whether it makes sense to fork over $2k+ if the following year their kid will not be selected. The consumer always think they are entitled to something just because they paid for services for the prior year. There is a fine line that the club needs to balance but from what I heard it was a large number of players from Joga. All that it means is that the "Red" players were just not as good as the Joga players that tried out and if the club didn't actively recruit those players than parents of those "Red" players need to realize that their kids just did not develop enough to be part of the Academy team. Unfortunately we live in a "Pay to Play" society where many players only play at a certain level because they can afford it. |
And to be honest, Joga has a pretty good reputation for development so it is not like scrubs came in off the street and beat some kids out. |
Maybe joga folded it's local team because of access to the local scene. Unfortunately too many leagues exist and they put restrictions on access to those smaller clubs. Originally the Joga team played with FPYC but once they separated, they no longer had access to NCSL. As stated before, open access to those who want to compete and many of these "elite" teams would struggle against those that live and breathe soccer for a living. Have new teams start at the bottom and allow them to earn the right to play in the higher division. Then you'll really see development increase in this country. Coaching will improve, players will be challenged constantly and have a purpose to get better. Create a truly Regional league that includes all. |
| I agree that these Joga kids are talented/skilled enough to play anywhere. It's tough when they all pick Arlington or whatever. There isn't loyalty to Arlington. Next year they all can get a bug up their ass and decide on McLean or something. Then these Arlington kids that were beaten out the year before, may not want to come back. It's a tough business. It's not easy on clubs, coaches, parents, and of course and most importantly...the kids. |
It is travel soccer, the only thing that should really matter is merit and talent. Loyalty? LOL |
