Fire in upper NW?

Kudos to you for this, Mr. Steele. I, too, was wrong about this, as I believed that it was more likely that this attack grew out of Mr. Savoupolos being involved in some sort of nefarious behavior. It seemed unlikely to me that such a horribly violent act would be motivated by what is a rather small amount of money, in the context of what was done to get it, and required more of a motive given the circumstances, environment, length of the event, etc.

While there may yet be more to the story, especially if accomplices ultimately turn out to have been involved, that doesn't seem particularly likely anymore. Chalk up another one up to savagery, I guess.

I think part of what Jeff is saying here is: let's focus on what Chief Lanier is NOT saying; that is:

-WHY wasn't it random? What was the connection that the Chief seems so confident about? What does she know, but isn't telling us?

There seem to be clues, but is anyone sure about the motivation to attack this particular family? (It does not seem clear to me at this point; maybe I missed something; we can all be wrong from time to time).

The suspect worked for the deceased business.

It really is beneath the usual level of discussion on this site to continue to argue this absurd semantic BS with this rube who stumbled over here from rushlimbaugh.com. If they want to continue to think this sort of thing is "random" and could happen to everyone so we should all live in fear, nothing will dissuade him.

Look up American Iron Works in the news, Stringer - Comptroller, Guyanese workers. Could be something.

Looks like a different company.

That company is NORTH American Iron Works, not the company involved here.

What do you mean?

Also, CBS says Wint was from Guyana, emigrated to US 15 years ago. He was briefly a Marine (I assume US Marine).

1. Please do not make anymore comments about prison rape or how he's going to be living large in jail, whichever is your preferred fantasy/outrage. Prison rape is not righteous or good, no matter what someone did. Jail is not a hotel, no matter how much you want to think it is.

2. Re: hiring felons. Many of you are lawyers, so you should know that there are a lot of kinds of felony. What this man is accused of doing - felony. Copyright infringement - also felony. I also vaguely recall that driving more than 20 mph above the speed limit in VA is a felony. If you're saying "No one should ever hire felons" you are talking not just about violent murders but also non-violent criminals whose offense is deemed that serious. Because of the war on drugs, there are many non-violent drug users who have felony convictions even though they never hurt anyone in their lives. I think it is just and compassionate for businesses to provide second chances to convicted felons who are trying to establish new lives and behavior patterns. Suggesting that this crime wouldn't have occurred if AIW hadn't hired this man might be true, but it also might not be. This man still might have committed this crime, or another crime even more awful.

3. Right now, this man is the only suspect. Suggestions that his whole family is in on it are just as offensive as the "Housekeeper is in on it and sent MS-13 to extort money" suggestions from yesterday and the day before.

You sound like a very sheltered, naive pollyanna.

Did you check his criminal record before writing this?

Did you read about his brother, another sexual assaulter/psychopath? Here you go, a crime committed when he was only a teenager:

http://www6.montgomerycountymd.gov/Apps/Police/News/NA_details.asp?NaID=834

Do you really believe that the DNA lies? Do you really believe he is innocent? Do you really expect people to say nothing when there is a nationwide manhunt on for this man? I did not engage in speculation about the housekeeper, and I felt horrible for her. But this is quite different. Turn on CNN and you'll see.

I have no idea what part of my post you're responding to with any of that. I'm not sheltered or naive. I just don't think prison rape is okay and don't think "DON'T HIRE FELONS" is a way to prevent crime. I'm certainly not the only person who thinks either of those things. I also don't believe that he's innocent, but until such time as the cops announce that his mom, brothers or sister are also wanted in connection with this crime, posting their names, businesses, Facebook accounts, etc. is just as bad as the pillorying of the housekeeper from earlier this week. If those people were wanted in connection with this crime, I'm pretty sure Lanier would've said so.

Good Lord, is that how you're interpreting it? I am not the "random" poster, but agree that we all need to realize that nobody is immune from bad luck or encounters with evil people. It certainly was random that poor little Phiilip was at home that day instead of safe at school. Some posters are becoming frantic as they look for explanations and connections that will allow them to feel safe again.

And far from living in fear, I feel more serene recognizing that there is only so much I can do to secure my safety and that of my loved ones. Just read DCUM long enough and you'll see that some people are living in near constant anxiety as they try to micromanage their family's safety and wellbeing.

Yes, but this is 2nd time I've heard on CBS Radio update that Wint is from Guyana. Maybe he has a lot of friends or just likes Jamaica.

Seriously. This has been one of the most shocking things to me as I read the thread. People are legit paranoid and anxious. It makes me wonder if they were walking around and living completely blind to the realities of the world. People talking about being scared b/c he may be in NYC, etc. Get a grip, open your eyes, and be smart.
