Get over yourself. Things that are surprising garner the most attention. A heinous crime in a very low-crime part of town is surprising.

Unless they come up with a motive more personal to this family than just that this guy worked at some point for one of the father's businesses (like he was hired by someone with a grudge against them), I would still put this in the category of terrifying shit that could happen to anyone.

Do you understand that random means no connection?

Don't be a simpleton. this guy was likely so far down the ladder at the victim's company that they had zero interaction. He just knew the father was the big boss and ergo likely rich. As connection's go, that's pretty effing thin. There is very little difference between that and any random perp targeting a house or person that they surmise is "rich".

OMG. This isn't a goddamned Socratic circle. Random would be they were just out driving around and for no earthly reason, they stopped at this house and committed this crime. Just stop with your absurd analysis of a perfectly understood word.

^^meant to add--this was NOT a random crime. Just stop it.

1. Please do not make anymore comments about prison rape or how he's going to be living large in jail, whichever is your preferred fantasy/outrage. Prison rape is not righteous or good, no matter what someone did. Jail is not a hotel, no matter how much you want to think it is.

2. Re: hiring felons. Many of you are lawyers, so you should know that there are a lot of kinds of felony. What this man is accused of doing - felony. Copyright infringement - also felony. I also vaguely recall that driving more than 20 mph above the speed limit in VA is a felony. If you're saying "No one should ever hire felons" you are talking not just about violent murders but also non-violent criminals whose offense is deemed that serious. Because of the war on drugs, there are many non-violent drug users who have felony convictions even though they never hurt anyone in their lives. I think it is just and compassionate for businesses to provide second chances to convicted felons who are trying to establish new lives and behavior patterns. Suggesting that this crime wouldn't have occurred if AIW hadn't hired this man might be true, but it also might not be. This man still might have committed this crime, or another crime even more awful.

3. Right now, this man is the only suspect. Suggestions that his whole family is in on it are just as offensive as the "Housekeeper is in on it and sent MS-13 to extort money" suggestions from yesterday and the day before.

You sound like a very sheltered, naive pollyanna.

Did you check his criminal record before writing this?

Did you read about his brother, another sexual assaulter/psychopath? Here you go, a crime committed when he was only a teenager:

http://www6.montgomerycountymd.gov/Apps/Police/News/NA_details.asp?NaID=834

Do you really believe that the DNA lies? Do you really believe he is innocent? Do you really expect people to say nothing when there is a nationwide manhunt on for this man? I did not engage in speculation about the housekeeper, and I felt horrible for her. But this is quite different. Turn on CNN and you'll see.

This case reminds me of the horrible home invasion that happened in Cheshire CT, a home invasion that ended in a fire to cover up murders as well (though much more complicated, there's a whole documentary on HBO for the interested).

You miss the point, I think.

There is an address for a Dillion Wint in NYC on whitepages, for whatever it's worth.

You are wrong on all counts.

I don't think I am wrong but I would be happy to be proved wrong.

I think part of what Jeff is saying here is: let's focus on what Chief Lanier is NOT saying; that is:

-WHY wasn't it random? What was the connection that the Chief seems so confident about? What does she know, but isn't telling us?

There seem to be clues, but is anyone sure about the motivation to attack this particular family? (It does not seem clear to me at this point; maybe I missed something; we can all be wrong from time to time).

Wow needed to catch up on 20 pages only to discover it was not worth it...racism and a discussion over the word "random."

Racism is horrible and the crime wasn't random!

He worked for the father's company at some point. That is the connection.

So you think it was just as likely that little white Judy (I made that up-not a real person) from accounts receivable at the company would commit this crime?

I wonder if he went through the special training program SS set up with another business partner?
