You may find a niche role in the midfield but will be a limited player. If you have breakaway speed but limited technical skill, teams will take a chance on you up front in hopes that you can chase down long balls and have enough skill to put it in. But you have to have elite speed and again have a limited role because you won’t be able to build up play out of the back or midfield. I would strongly prioritize technical development but as you get older and have the baseline technical skill shift time towards speed, agility and endurance.

I agree. They do not even need to run with the ball. It’s just a poke or hard touch to get the ball by the opponent and chase the ball down. If you are faster no need to actual have control of the ball. That is different vs running by a player while dribbling. The thing is if you are the fastest on your team you are just not playing at a high enough level. What happens at the next level when you go from being the fastest on the team to average?

What good is that speed if it takes 3 touches to get control of a simple pass.

+1. Or the first touch is so bad that it bounces away towards the defenders.

Parents of slower kiddos get upset with the elite/fast player discussions…

It becomes a 50/50 ball which the fastest player wins. This is core to many coaches/clubs style of play. It is also why they take aggressive fast players. So a forward will dribble up to a defender and kick it by 10-20 by the defender. At this point it becomes a foot race. There is no “move” or technical skill.

This applies also to players with a bad first touch. Two player are 30 feet apart. The bad touch player receives the ball and it bounces off her foot 15 feet towards the opponent. Now it’s a 50/50 ball the fastest and most aggressive play will wins the ball. Do not act like you have never seen it.

“Best” player is subjective but at least that is a number of 1.

Correction, I’m sure they are all good kids! The best soccer player hands down went to VDA.

Having seen all of the team which are ranked on here. There is no elite speed on these teams. Sorry kiddo.

This is closer but I still cannot see a world where a team with one league win last year is even on this list. Vienna should replace Bethesda who should sit in the corner with BRYC. Unless Bethesda has added several quality players I don’t see how their season improves in league play.

McLean/Virginia Union also only had one league win last year in league play. You can throw them in with BRYC and Bethesda. No different. You keep failing to group them in with your opinion of league wins for some reason....

Remember Chippy, these are just people's predictions for a year from now and they are just opinions. I side more with the original opinion piece with the exception of one or two that could be interchanged. I also think VYS could easily be 9 or 10.

The VA Union ranking can at least be defended since the team has had an influx of talent due to the club merger and that alone demonstrates a potential for improvement but there are no such claims for Bethesda. What has changed on their roster or the rosters of their competition that implies such a ranking? They still lost to Frederick twice, meanwhile Arlington, FCV and Metro ALL had convincing winning seasons overall.

If Bethesda has added some impact players I stand corrected but nobody has made that case. And by the way Chippy, it is a list and a list made without any explained rationale, sorry if discussing the "projections" triggers you but it shouldn't. It is perfectly objective to ask why a Top Ten ranking for a team that won one league game? Again, VA Union, same story but the logic likely falls in line with an improved roster. That is perfectly reasonable, it could also be wrong but at least it is a reason.

FCV is probably a little to low, especially relative to Arlington. I know Arlington is now getting the ECNL bump but they lost all their games to FCV last year. And Metro seems to have righted the ship a bit with the 08 team. It seems that their 10th spot is due to overall club reputation. It looks like they improved a lot in the spring season by either beating teams they lost to in the fall outright or bringing the margins down to one goal games.

Vienna beat Loudoun, which you put at No.3.
