Too young to tryout. Former player--ODP isn't what it used to be. |
So what dog do you have in this fight then? Was it your neighbor's kid that wasn't selected and you want to talk about that for a few pages? |
I don't own a dog. The training is better at our club than the ODP trainers. |
OK, so you are a former player (how many years ago) familiar with the training that happens at ODP these days, even though you don't have a kid participating because they are too young to tryout? Seems like we'll be able to have a reasonable and informed discussion.... |
| I think one of the things that the kids can get from ODP training is that the players that they are going up against are mostly high level creating a higher level of competition than they sometimes get at their own clubs. Training is different everywhere you go and created for a specific needs so what is better is also much to one's opinion. At most clubs, coaches are working in a team environment of 12-18 kids so there is more focus on the team aspect and the individual. |
| Agree. And they gain valuable experience stepping outside their comfort zone and into an environment where they don't know all the other players and they aren't necessarily the best player in the group. |
| absolutely, people are so quick to judge and label something as bad just because it's different than what they had 15+ yrs ago or what they currently receive at their clubs. The soccer environment is constantly changing and the quality of players is also evolving and improving. The quality and number of coaches has increased. Everyone has a different methodology, it's ok, expose your kids to all and you'll have a well rounded kid and soccer player. Don't be obsessed with one way is best. |
Just jumping in here ... I know a BRYC parent who just joined our club because she said only 1 or 2 of the team's players got offers. She said the rest of the team's players (u12) were not offered any spot at all. That is not being demoted; that is being cut. |
The point has been conceded. The kids that were cut simply are not good at soccer. Try Lacrosse or field hockey. |
I wish DCUM forced us to make up user IDs. Some people in this thread care about youth soccer as a whole. Not just as it applies to us, but to our neighbors and friends. And to the sport that we love. If you're really so bereft of empathy, you need to speak to someone about that. But in the meantime, can you just go away and let us talk soccer? |
Hey, I tried to put a positive spin on a kid being cut. The OP insisted on blaiming a club versus circumstances that I had previously stated. And as it turned out I was right, the "cut kid" was in fact on the lowest team in the club. I tired to point out that in general, clubs do their best to not cut kids outright. This point simply could not be acknowledged and was only met with, "I know what cut is and this kid was cut" attitude. So be it, the kid was cut, instead of looking at the mechanics at play and the numbers involved I suppose it is better to simply say that a club would rather bring outside kids in and cut their previous players. But four pages later the truth comes out that the kid was on the last travel team the club provided. And yes it is a selection process, but at U10 if only 27 kids show up and your club only carries 12 players per team there just are not enough kids to make a third team. If there were then they would do their best to find a coach for a third team. I'm sorry that in the coaches eyes the kid was not better than perhaps 3 other kids is not a clubs fault. But regardless if more kids show up for tryouts than there are spots on a team there will be kids that do not make the team. This is why it is best to tryout for multiple clubs if you feel your kid is on the bubble. |
If we can just talk about soccer and stop beating dead horses, that would be great |
I am sorry but explaining the general scenarios that lead to kids not being selected for a team is well within the wheelhouse of the thread. I cant speak for people that simply refuse to see the bigger picture and how it may trickle down and affect kids. I suppose it is just easier to blame it all on the boogie man or "politics" or evil clubs trying to steal talent away from other clubs rather than looking realistically at the numbers and the talent. |
Yes please, which club is it this year? Is it Arlington? |
| Eddie Lima at the helm: you don't say. Good for him. |
