This is an oft-repeated lie.

Immigrants who enter the US at the Southern border take jobs at low pay that no Americans are willing to take. They pick our crops, so we have cheap produce. They cook many of the meals we eat in restaurants, and clean our dishes when we're finished. They mow our lawns, care for our children and our elderly parents, build our homes, repair our roads, work harder than most Americans are willing to do for far lower pay.

That's the real cost of immigration. The cost to the immigrants, not to us. We are living off their desperation, and enjoying cheap food at their expense. How much are Americans willing to pay to keep immigrants out of our country? When those costs erode our paychecks, we may finally develop real immigration reform that allows workers from other countries to live and work here legally doing jobs Americans won't do.

Do you want to pay $4 for a green bean? If you do, then pay Americans $30+ per hour to work in the hot sun in dusty farms picking produce that immigrants will pick for a fraction of that pay. No Americans will do this work for low pay. The crops will rot in the fields were it not for cheap immigrant labor. And when that happens, Americans will begin screaming about the outrageously high cost of food that cheap immigrant labor is currently keeping low.

I disagree with most of what you wrote. However, if taken what you wrote with a grain of salt, just how many of these people do we need and when is enough simply enough? Is there an end? How many people? Where do they go? Who should be taking care of them? And with whose money?

Dp- the point is they are taking care of us.
Like literally. They are working in nursing homes, hospitals, and day cares. I don’t know how many we need, but I do know we don’t have enough now.

I’d wipe boomer butts in nursing homes, if I was paid a commensurate wage. Neoliberals love the cheap labor provided by an unending stream of desperate workers used to worse conditions though.

You f’ing liar. LIAR LIAR LIAR.
God damn you’re a dishonest f@€k
No you wouldn’t. And here’s the thing. And it’s going to make you so so so mad.
I have a trust fund. I am happy to pay higher wages for my childcare and elder care. And In fact I do.
But my MAGA neighbors can’t and won’t. They are all over Nextdoor complaining about the prices they pay for the services they need. I live in a solidly red county in a red midwestern state. We don’t have a large immigrant population at the moment, but I’ve lived on the east coast and understand the challenges of those communities.
It’s not just “liberal elites” wanting this labor. Get fing real.

So, what you are saying is that you have not been affected by the results of Biden's open door policy when it comes to our southern border.
Good for you. Most are not so lucky.

Well maybe Abbott can start shipping boat loads of unverified, unchecked, vaccine free, illegal migrants to your city and state. Please let the world know so that you can get your cheap labor you so desire.

Another record for Biden. Not a good one.

BREAKING: CBP sources tell FOX there have now been over 276,00 migrant encounters at the southern border in December, the highest single month ever recorded, breaking the prior record set in September at 269,735, and there are still 3 days of December left. Record is being shattered.
This new record number includes over 230,000 Border Patrol apprehensions of illegal immigrants in December, also the highest single month of apprehensions ever recorded for Border Patrol.
We are now at over 760,000 migrant encounters since October 1st, making the first quarter of fiscal year 2024 also the highest ever recorded. Thats a population size bigger than Seattle in just three months.
All records being blown out of the water under the Biden admin as the crisis gets worse - not better.

In comparison - during Trump's entire presidency, only 14 people on the terror watch list tried to enter.
Under Biden - that number has ballooned. And, he still has a year to go.

The arrest comes amid continued concerns that terrorists may try to enter the U.S. through the land borders, particularly at the southern border where officials are overwhelmed with the migrant numbers coming over. But the northern border has also seen a sharp increase in encounters too.

In FY 23, there were 484 encounters of people on the FBI’s terror watch list at the ports of entry, and three between ports of entry.

The Department of Homeland Security’s threat assessment, published in October, noted that agents have encountered a growing number on the watch list and warned that "terrorists and criminal actors may exploit the elevated flow and increasingly complex security environment to enter the United States."

"Individuals with terrorism connections are interested in using established travel routes and permissive environments to facilitate access to the United States," the assessment also said.

At the same time, FBI Director Christopher Wray has said that those who evade Border Patrol and get into the U.S. as gotaways are a source of "great concern" for the agency.

Officials have also stressed that encounters of those on the watchlist are uncommon, and have highlighted the multi-layered screening processes designed to weed out those with terror ties coming into the U.S. -- as they did with the Iranian encountered this year.

Because after 50 years of being squeezed to increase profits, one year of “decent” wage growth isn’t going to make up for it.

If since the 60s, the minimum wage had kept pace with productivity gains (i.e. productivity increases, workers receive commensurate increase in the legal minimum wage), the minimum wage would be more than $24 dollars. That’s not like, a negotiated minimum wage, or a average minimum, that’s what the minimum would have been.

But nope, we opened up trade, allowed companies to outsource, allowed a dearth of desperate people to come—while increasing the size of the GDP so technically causing economic growth—helped to funnel almost all those gains to stockholders, private equity groups, etc.

And as for wiping boomer asses for commensurate pay— we probably have a different idea of commensurate pay. The poopier (see what I did there?) a job is the more you should be paid for doing that job. And if at a point those costs rise too high then it will become cheaper to innovate, which will lead to long term productivity growth and who knows how many other benefits due to others piggybacking off an initial innovation to improve it/innovate something new.

And if those innovations would happen to make some jobs redundant? Well at that point, assuming we had less immigration and thus were able to assimilate people already here and build enough social capital, I think we’d also have instituted a much better social safety net. (Considering immigration-specifically lower-educated/skilled reduces support for redistributive welfare policies).

But right now, there’s hardly a need to innovate. Wages have been depressed to the point where it’s cheaper (for businesses) to just take advantage of a seemingly unending supply of cheap labor; than it would be for them to front the high investment costs required to innovate and implement new technology.

And there are a lot of people who have made the mayhem on the border - independents, democrats - their single issue.

Watching thousands and thousand of completely unvetted people from around the world march across the border every single day and disappear into the US is unsettling. There's not a country on Earth that would find that acceptable.

But having millions of mostly poor, uneducated men stream across the border is fine with the Biden administration and most democrats. So if you care about this kind of thing, the only recourse is to remove democrats from power and elect people that will get the border under control and deport the millions and millions of mostly illiterate and low skill illegal migrants that have taken advantage of the current appalling lack of border security.

It's fine with Republicans too, because they aren't moving a single piece of meaningful legislation to actually deal with any of it.

I’m tired of republicans lying

Every single vote is public record

Funds for border security they voted NO
Funds for Veterans they vote no
Funds for anything for a wall at the border they voted no

When you scream might want to scream at Republicans

Also they own the House learn civics that is their job not Biden’s.

“Democrats said borders are racist, no humans are illegal, and the concept of autonomous countries is a racist, white, western construct.

Don’t you know? Large swaths of the west, Texas, etc. used to belong to Mexico. Therefore, according to Democrats this is also justice for historical wrongs. Half the U.S. is simply being handed back to Mexico, lol.”

Someone said the above in the other thread. Aren’t Democrats Americans? Myself as an immigrant have always been Democrat as they have been more pro-immigration but what’s going on at the border is just too much even for me a legal immigrant to digest. This is not ok. I am so done at this point. My fellow Americans who have been here for many generations, I can feel your frustration
