DCPS students shafted again - sign petition to keep Jelleff field public

+1 Especially if they have the endowment and cash on hand that the bragged about.

"Talbott says that Maret is aware of the complaints from public school advocates, and so last year agreed to let Hardy use the turf field from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. “on most Wednesdays.”"

Wowie. How isolated and tone deaf can that woman be? It's laughable.

Dave McKenna is a local and national treasure. Thank God Deadspin picked him up after the City Paper had their cutbacks.

So great the he's a Hardy parent. Did DPR know they were tangling with one of DC's snarkiest writers?

Just coming over from Deadspin. How is this a 20 page thread and no one has the contract? Does it contain an automatic extension provision if Maret does X, Y, and Z?

It’s never been publicly made available.

It’s a completely backroom deal, reminiscent of “old DeeCee.”

The times and politics of the city have changed. People who have money are 1) opting into the public schools and 2) are paying attention.

I honestly think DPR, Jack Evans, and the Mayor’s office did not anticipate this kind of response.

It’s sad and crazy and infuriating. So Maret agrees to put down new turf and put up a new fence and pays cash (which likely enriches corrupt public employees) and our public school students are prevented from using a public facility right across the street. I would much prefer that my tax dollars be allocated to take care of the field so public school children can actually use this public resource. My Hardy student has to travel miles across the city for practice and games. Why? This stinks to high heaven. Please sign the petition demanding that this closed door decision be reversed.

You claim public employees are corrupt, and then share a random petition against a private school?

You may want to visit a logician.

Why random?

The petition is not against a private school.

PP, your post makes no sense. Why is circulating a petition corrupt? I really hope the WaPo does a story on these types of backroom deals. Horrible that this was allowed to happen 10 years ago and then to have it happen again! And, there was a similar deal for the Lab school. The politicians in this city certainly make private schools a top priority.

It should be subject to a FOIA Request. Even if they FOIA request is denied, then there's another story about what BS exemption they claim to keep from disclosing it.

The original agreement from ten years ago is here:

No mention of an extension. If it in fact exists it must have been added later.

Wow. Thank you mystery PP who posted the 2010 agreement announcement. So no mention of an extension or option to extend yet the head of Maret looks down her nose and says "it was an expectation." Wow. What a piece of work.

IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW HOW DC WORKS, NOW YOU KNOW. DC needs democracy, not just representation.

Thank you for sharing this. Very helpful. So three properties were purchased together in 2010 for $20 million. I've seen mention in this thread of the Maret property being purchased for a specific amount but didn't see that in the announcement or the agreement.

Maret does seem to have an extension/renewal in the original agreement. It says if the easement is extended or renewed the use agreement is automatically extended or renewed. Is a copy of the easement available?

So the extension/renewal is conditional on renewing the easement? No actual extension/renewal in the the MOA?
