| IDK - the elementary schools have more counselors, specialists and social workers than teachers. |
|
Schools are rated largely based on test scores. Raising scores takes time (if you aren't going for the quick fix of moving in a large enough number of high scoring students)
It may take a few years but candidates should have some ideas about how to do it. |
no they dont. |
| ^^ Our title 1 ES did. |
| So then it would seem that One Fairfax would be a good option if it meant changing the boundaries to redistribute students. This redistricting should occur around the Dulles area, not affecting the Langley boundaries. That boundary change should occur with closer neighborhoods. If Title 1 funding could kick in earlier than 40%, that would help. |
What would you suggest doing? Which schools are you considering? |
DP - Our Title 1 ES did NOT. |
So, you plan to bus kids all over western Fairfax? That is what you are suggesting. |
That post is ridiculous. Rules for boundaries have to apply to every school. No schools are exempt, not Madison, not McLean, not Langley, Marshall Springfield Oakton West Potomac Lee Mount Vernon everyone under the same rules. |
FCPS does school wide Title 1 at 45%. It could do targeted groups only if dispersed. Consider the pre school initiative which is multiple years of 300% when grants are for 250%. If FCPS expands FCPS site pre school why have families at 250% or 300% poverty or less use different elementary school sites? There are regulations or policies defining when a boundary change should occur to utilize existing capacity at adjacent or nearby sites. It's all subjective and political. This board is the worst on that with even building any Oakton area elementary school and the West Potomac addition. Even the board of supervisors recognize that and have stated the fact. West Potomac nd Mount Vernon are immune- might as well be the City of Alexandria or Falls Church. |

Why does a discussion of candidates in Dranesville get swamped with posts from a poster complaining about an elementary school in Oakton and the West Potomac/Mount Vernon boundaries?
Is the suggestion that the money involved should be spent on overcrowded schools in Dranesville instead? |
| So who are people voting for if they are against One Fairfax's social/racial equity policy? Serious question. Which candidates have come out strongly against. |
3 running for Dranesville seat and get to vote for 3 at large. Guess what? All 4 in those elected positions get the power of the vote on the school board. Reps from other magisterial districts have said their piece on mclean to Langley and were big blockades . Students cross magisterial districts in attendance areas and people in Dranesville pay for those capital projects in other districts. Money ? There is money that should be spent on disadvantaged + ELs instead of current allocations. Whoever becomes the Dranesville rep should look at objective measurements and funding. There's no WPO special tax district. |

Hello Everyone:
Thank you for those who attended my Meet & Greet yesterday at the Dolley Madison Library. Great conversations about overcrowding, long term solutions, etc. I just wanted to remind you that I will be holding another one tonight in Herndon. Please see the invites on Facebook and NextDoor below. Looking forward to seeing you there: https://www.facebook.com/events/539712143452409/ https://nextdoor.com/news_feed/?post=126542951 |
You know the answer. Every one of the Republican-endorsed candidates (Palathingal, Buford, DeStefano, Karloutsos, Tompkins, Bayer, Pafford, Mosley, Ramirez Drain, Schultz, Wilson) has come out against "equity." The very idea threatens them to the core. The Democrats support One Fairfax, but don't agree that it means what the Republicans claim. The independent candidate in Dranesville (Mobasheri) also appears to support it, if means promoting equal opportunities for students, rather than guaranteeing equal outcomes. |
