NNAT: 122
COGAT: (V 128 / Q 146 / NV 130 / Composite 142 )
GBRS: (#Consistent / #Frequent / #Occasional)3 C, 1 F
In-Pool: (Y/N) Y
Parent Referral: (Y/N) N
WISC:
Zip Code: 20120
NOT IN

His DRA score is 38, all 4s on his report cards since K.

Could someone please explain why this child did not qualify for advanced academics?

Are you FCPS or Private?

FCPS, at a non-center, no local level 4 ES.

Does it seem to anyone else like there are way more WTF? rejections this year than previous years?

The only unifying theme I've seen in these WTF in-pool rejections is that the parents didn't seem to fill out the optional questionnaire or provide work samples. The selection committee seemed to really want those this year.

Agree, which is odd because really, crap parents are providing from home can be so easily faked/made up.

I filled out the parent questionnaire. I did not submit additional work samples.

The schools aren't given any more information than we are. They just get a list of who was accepted and who was rejected. I had one of these WTF rejections several years ago, met with the AART, and found out that the AART was just as baffled as we were. The AART said that every year, there are people with very weak packets who get accepted and people with very strong packets who are rejected.

Some of it is the luck of the draw. People judging the files have their own opinions and biases, and if you end up with the wrong combination of reviewers, even a strong file could be rejected.

I will post more details when I have them, as I do not have COGAT details with me now. As mentioned composite was 130. All the numbers were fairly consistent with one another. I do need to correct the prior score I mentioned for NNAT - I said it was 140. That was from memory. Checked today it was actually 148 - 1 question wrong on test. We provided recs , work products, pretty much anything they would consider. We will appeal and are considering the WISC. As mentioned above, alll consistents for GBRs and great comments. DRA is 136. I wish everyone luck on your appeal, if you choose to consider it.

I agree, but I wonder if the committee perceived a lack of effort on the part of the parents as arrogance.

Was in the similar boat few year ago. Took the WISC and appealed. She made it.

That would be a strange thing to assume. More like cluelessness, or people who trust the schools to make the right decision.

It makes no sense for a committee of educators to agree that this child shouldn't be in advanced academics. I mean, really!?

It doesn't make any sense. You'll drive yourself crazy if you try to decipher the AAP selection system. The only thing you can do is appeal and trust that eventually you'll have a non-cranky AAP selection panel.

Its like there was one table of drunk nutjobs.

I was just thinking the opposite of my parent questionnaire. I wonder if I boasted about my kid too much and it backfired. I have reread the gbrs and my questionnaire several times and they are consistent with one another. Even some of our examples are the same.

My packet did include a random math worksheet. I hope the AART just xeroxed this in error because it was neither impressive nor appropriate to be submitted as a work product.

Honestly seems like the committee was just doing some kind of random selecting. No rhyme or reason to any of it.
Anonymous
Well, it could be people aren't just posting the decisions that make logical sense.

Not according to the one I've spoken with. She says there are a few surprises each year, going both ways.
