It isn’t advanced academics. Not sure what it is. With low scores getting in and high scores getting rejected, it simply isn’t. There will be lawsuits and rightly so. It gives certain kids access to a better education and there doesn’t seem to be a rational basis for it. Someone is going to bring the whole thing down. And considering it costs the county a fortune to maintain this two-tiered system, I hope it does get tossed out. And no, we weren’t rejected. We decided the whole system was a farce and went private.

No, it doesn't cost a fortune and the state of Virginia requires some sort of gifted program. So it's this or something else.

Just got our packet from the AART. I am honestly completely baffled. My two older children had lower scores than my youngest but were both admitted in the first round.

NNAT: 122
COGAT: (V 128 / Q 146 / NV 130 / Composite 142 )
GBRS: (#Consistent / #Frequent / #Occasional)3 C, 1 F
In-Pool: (Y/N) Y
Parent Referral: (Y/N) N
WISC:
Zip Code: 20120
NOT IN

His DRA score is 38, all 4s on his report cards since K.

Could someone please explain why this child did not qualify for advanced academics?

No one can explain this. Your AART is probably as baffled as everyone else is. Your kid looks like a shoo-in on paper. I would appeal with a letter, work samples, and whatever else you can find, and then hope that a new panel of reviewers will fix the mistake of the previous panel. All areas on the CogAT were strong, and a composite of 142 is in the 99th percentile locally.. GBRS looks strong, too. I'd set up a meeting with the AART to ask for advice on appealing.

Nonsense, the NNAT has always been to help get kids in but not to keep kids out.

122 isn't even that low.

But at this time do not know GBRS. Interestingly enough, school led me to believe prior to submitting application that they would most likely get in.

Did you get the gbrs?

You can request the packet.

I am guessing my kid had poor work samples and less than stellar gbrs so he was rejected with high test scores.

UPDATE:
Requested packet. 4 consistently observed with great comments from the school. Baffled about the result.

I don’t understand why your kid was rejected and same with my kid. High test scores plus great gbrs.

I just scheduled a wisc.

Does it seem to anyone else like there are way more WTF? rejections this year than previous years?

It seems like there are fewer scores being posted at all. So the surprises stand out even more.

Do the AARTs know/understand why kids are rejected and just won't tell parents?

Are you FCPS or Private?

The only unifying theme I've seen in these WTF in-pool rejections is that the parents didn't seem to fill out the optional questionnaire or provide work samples. The selection committee seemed to really want those this year.
