Smollett is not quoted as saying he had a broken rib. Take that issue up with TMZ and its unnamed source.

Sources directly connected to Jussie tell TMZ, the actor arrived in Chicago from New York late Monday, and at around 2 AM he was hungry and went to a Subway. We're told when shortly after he walked out on his way home, someone yelled, "Aren't you that f***ot 'Empire' n*****?"

The 2 men -- both white and wearing ski masks -- viciously attacked Jussie as he fought back, but they beat him badly and fractured a rib. They put a rope around his neck, poured bleach on him and as they left they yelled, "This is MAGA country."

So TMZ is claiming he said that (by paraphrasing it, I guess), but the only quotes I see are those connected to MAGA.

I am willing to wager that TMZ's source is Smollett's manager, Brandon Moore.

TMZ's initial reporting said that he claimed the attackers were white people and that they yelled "this is MAGA country."
Police statement came out - they said they don't know the race and there is no report of anyone yelling that.
Then, they went on a follow up interview, and suddenly, Smollett is saying they yelled it.
And, then we find out that Moore claims he was on the phone with Smollett at the time of the attack.
Stands to reason that Moore made the statement to TMZ. Question is.... is it true?
