I’m PP. I’m not washing my hands. It’s why no Dems will get my vote for County Board in the near future - they don’t care about APS. I still disagree with the Cambridgemodel that the SB Chair has mentioned in public, which is what you just referenced. However, pointing out that some things truly are out of the SB’s control doesn’t mean that I don’t hold the CB accountable too. |
CB is the one who washes their hands of the schools. Every year — here’s your money and go away. There is zero consideration of how their actions improve act schools. Frankly, they just want to go about with their liberal policies and ridiculous spending. Most probablybhave their eyes on a larger prize. Make everyone happy and just spend money and force affordable housing (but only in certain areas). Anyone with kids who voted for Katie Cristol better be paying attention. She is doing your kids no good. $100m for a pool? When we need another high school? It is outrageous. So all you folks in S Arlington who want diversity, your CB is making it harder. |
IIRC, the priority list originated when the SB asked the loudest, most active people in the community what they cared about most. They said, "proximity" (which mainly means property values) and so the SB said ok that's what we'll tell the staff to prioritize. They cater to the loudest voices in the room from square 1. |
It's def true that the CB, and local dems especially, are going to have to correct their course in the coming years. For decades they enjoyed having tons of money to spend and no checks on it. Parents and children were a minority; they moved to fairfax. Now they are staying and making noise. Vihstadt is not an aberration. He is a good politician, but his positions really appeal to who the ACDC is accustomed to ignoring and still hasn't wised up to the fact that this group is growing. If another candidate like JV runs, she or he will win easily. So easily. It'll happen. |
None of that means that certain SB members don’t believe proximity should be considered above the other factors. Again, you just can’t believe they might actually agree with those being loudest. Or that to balance the “considerations” (because that’s just what they are — not priorities) it makes more sense to have kids going to school closer to home. |
I've done more than assume or imagine. I've spoken with every individual board member over the course of years. There are some who don't give a crap about economic diversity. There are some who do. There are some who do but can't do anything about it because their colleagues won't. There are some who won't because it's not in their own self-interest and/or because they don't want any negative press. Some share "my" views but do not share "my" thoughts on how to get there - but then they do NOTHING instead of something different. APS' FIRST and foremost responsibility SHOULD be academics. |

Really the last neighborhood to call “not it” will be “stuck” with Drew is what I’m hearing.
Nobody else is complaining about moving to other schools. Where are the Oakridge parents who’s now going to HB? It’s a battle between Columbia Forest, Fairlington and Columbia Heights are there any other contenders? |
| It’s going to get uglier when the families zoned Drew and Randolph realize it’s going to be almost impossible to choice out in a few years. |
Come on dude, we all know that they are ciphers. They have no ideas of their own, they're just doing their time until a county board seat opens up. |
Nah. It'll just be like Alexandria. Rich and poor, no middle. Which is what the CB wants. Middle class people aren't reliable democrats. They have ideas of their own because they're usually the people who feel the effects of rich politicians efforts to help the poor. |
Yes, it's musical chairs. FWIW, my impression of the Henry contingent is that it's pretty much that half block of 12th adjacent to Walter Reed where people have built million dollar houses over the last 5 years. That's why they push the diversity issue, because it's really just about ... dollars. That street is equidistant from Drew and from Fleet. It's actually a touch closer to Drew if you plot google map directions and choose walk. |
I’m wondering if staff gave those He run folks what they want in this first proposal knowing full well the resulting map would draw outrage. The. They can turn to those He day families and say “it just doesn’t work sending you to Fleet.” I would hope so but it is hard to change those maps meaningfully once they are out there. |
Maybe, but it would require Columbia Forest and others to get organized and speak up. They do have the better argument, but the SB over and over has shown that it will give the loudest, most annoying voices what they want if they will just go away. Can't win if you don't play. |
Which is how we end up with schools that have insane FARMS rates in one of the richest and smallest counties in the country. The ones that don’t speak up tend to be the ones that don’t have the money. This is how the problem was created in the first place. |
| The problem got created by Arlington Democrats and their single minded obsession with building as much affordable housing as possible, regardless of impact. That's why they are clustered where costs are cheapest, regardless of the impact on the neighborhood, schools, services, etc |
