| Just a reminder to folks that the first community engagement meeting on South Arlington boundary redrawing is tonight, and will include initial boundary scenarios. It will be live streamed if you want to watch but cannot attend: https://www.apsva.us/engage/livestream/ |
| I wish they would post the info the morning of the mtg instead of after. It would give people more time to think about the scenarios. |
I'm not expecting many surprises, but I think the nut of the problem is efficiency. It won't be easy to fill Drew to its current load without drawing some funny boundaries way outside of Nauck. Into Columbia forest or to the Berkeley. |
| Seems like a good start will be the units south of the Pike that currently go to Henry. That looks to be ~150 kids right there. I'd guess those are the folks who will be showing up in force tonight to #resist. |
I agree. If they really wanted a productive discussion with the community, they'd give people the chance to review and reflect before the meeting, rather than wrapping up the Q&A portion before people have even had a chance to process it. That said, given some of the phenomenally poor behavior we've seen from the Arlington community in the past (everywhere, not just here), I can appreciate their disinclination to give people more time to get worked up before the meeting. |
| PP again. Why isn't the answer: 38100, 38110, 46010, 46011, 46120, 46130, 46131, 46132, 46133, 48220? That's 275 kids to Drew, makes room at Hoffman-Boston to take some Oakridge and alleviate overcrowding there, moves only kids who aren't walkers to their current schools, and does something generally positive for Drew's FARMS rate. What am I missing? |
One issue may be alignment. I believe all of current Drew is zoned to Gunston, and the planning units you're listing are mostly Jefferson with some Gunston. I don't know what the threshold is where they say there's an alignment issue, but that would be less than 1/3 of Drew going to Jefferson while everyone else goes to Gunston. |
Ah. Forgot about that one. |
I mean...wouldn’t you? That has to be the crappiest end of the stick in this entire process. I’m not saying I agree with “resisting” but it is a pretty enraging proposition for them. |

The presentation is up: https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/Sept.-26-Getting-Started-Community-Mtg-Presentation.pdf
And new information here: https://www.apsva.us/elementary-school-boundary-change/ Am I reading this right, they are going to make one proposal and that's it? Also, see the school-level data document. They refer to Fleet as "Fleet (Henry)" meaning, I guess, that they are going to put all of current Henry at Fleet? |
| So they balanced FARMS among Oakridge, Fleet and Hoffman-Boston and then threw up their hands for Randolph and Drew? |
That's certainly how I read it. Didn't even include the proposed map in the presentation. Why not just lay it all out there? No guts, no glory APS. |
I don't know the Drew area well but there really isn't anything they can do about Randolph given county housing policy. The area right around Randolph is crammed full of low-income housing. They can fill the school completely just from that small boundary around it. The only way to make that school not massively low-income would be to make it an option school. |
I think slide 14 is it. |
The proposed map is in the presentation -- slide 14, the "Getting Started Proposal" But, I notice they didn't put in the table with the FARMs and capacity %s |
