The woman, who has asked not to be identified, first approached Democratic lawmakers in July, shortly after Trump nominated Kavanaugh. The allegation dates back to the early nineteen-eighties, when Kavanaugh was a high-school student at Georgetown Preparatory School, in Bethesda, Maryland, and the woman attended a nearby high school. In the letter, the woman alleged that, during an encounter at a party, Kavanaugh held her down, and that he attempted to force himself on her. She claimed in the letter that Kavanaugh and a classmate of his, both of whom had been drinking, turned up music that was playing in the room to conceal the sound of her protests, and that Kavanaugh covered her mouth with his hand. She was able to free herself. Although the alleged incident took place decades ago and the three individuals involved were minors, the woman said that the memory had been a source of ongoing distress for her, and that she had sought psychological treatment as a result.

Same poster - I don't know about you but as a woman I would like to have this investigated before this man is given the power to determine what happens with my body.

Absolutely agree, and if Kavanaugh did nothing wrong, he should want to investigate to clear his name,

So clearly the GOP, probably because Kavanaugh disclosed it during his internal vetting process, knew about this and prepared by getting these signatures, because there is no way that happened over the last 18 hours.

well as long as he didn't rape 65 women i guess we're cool with the allegations he assaulted one then

and yeah - that's a great point that the gop must have known this was coming

This is absurd. I signed the letter. I learned of it last night.

(In response to this tweet...."This. Regardless of how all this falls out, the fact Grassley had a list of 65 women from Kavanaugh's high school as character witnesses LINED UP is literally the biggest, dumbest tell that they knew this was coming down the pike. Even wait until Monday, for chrissake.)

The idea that the GOP knew about this and were prepared with 65 names to rebut is telling.

What else do they know about that hasn't surfaced?
Why haven't the documents been released?

Why are they trying to jam this through?

Not only do you think it’s okay to spread rumors that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted someone in high school but now you want to spread rumors that it’s standard behavior for boys at like Landon and Prep to sexually assault girls. Good grief, you are sick. And no, I’m not associated with either of those schools in any way. And I’m a moderate registered Democrat who feels like she’s lost her party.

A moderate would wait until the investigation is finished, when everything can be known and weighed into account, and not have an immediate knee jerk reaction one way or the other. So, not buying your self depiction. You sound disengenuous.

Or like someone who truly does not care about women's safety

Why not dispense with courts and investigations entirely? Just fire people, throw people in jail as soon as they are accused of the accusation involves sex. Better safe than sorry right?

Well - as a lawyer myself, I believe in courts and investigations. I think this should be investigated. And if there's merit to the accusation, I think that Kavanaugh should not take the seat on the Sup Ct.

Funny - as I recall, there were plenty of folks like you who thought we shouldn't even bother checking into the Roy Moore accusations. Look where that got you. I'd say Republicans can continue to count on losing women's votes if you continue to ignore accusations against your superstars.

Feel free to investigate after he is confirmed. If you wanted to investigate it before confirmation Feinstein shouldn’t have waited until the 11th hour.

Due process, folks! That's how it works for Republicans. Let the white guy take what is his due - a job for the rest of his life, deciding law and policy for the whole country - and if some pesky little sexual assault charge turns out to have merit then we can write some very angry blog posts about it.

Republicans' slogan: If you're a white man, we've got your back, bro.

No, you can impeach him. Which requires actual *evidence* at an impeachment trial. That’s how the constitution works. Maybe you can have Gloria Aldred be the impeachment counsel.

Only one Sup Ct justice has ever been impeached and it was in 1805. It's not exactly a seamless process. I would posit that the better process is to investigate this allegation - and if it turns out to be as NBD as you say, then your boi Brett has nothing to worry about. If it turns out not to be as NBD as you say, then he never takes the seat.

That would have been fine if the accusation had been made a month ago. But waiting until the last minute is clearly a calculated politician stunt. So, no, stopping everything to investigate an anonymous accusation is not appropriate.

It was made a month ago, actually more like two months.

Ok well then I guess your elected representatives (especially Feinstein) let you down on this one. So sorry!

She isn’t even alleging that he did anything sexual. He put his and on her mouth. Ok? How is that sexual? Was he *thinking* about sex at the time? Did he have his penis out and chase her around with it? Seems like we are clutching our pearls over nothing.

And, the fact that you THINK this was prepared is telling. Very telling. Despite the fact that the women who signed the letter have put their names out there publicly and said they just learned of this allegation.
He will be confirmed despite the dirty dealings of the left.

No doubt Brett and Judge Roy Moore can share lots of stories of how unfair it is that women who were once high school girls are allowed to speak. How dare they!

How is it sexual? He tossed some girl on a bed? Ok? Did he try to take her panties off? No? Did he whip his unit out of his pants? No? Did he say “I am preparing to rape you, ma’am!” No? So what are we basing this on? Some sloppy wrestling session at a drunken teenage party?

The GOP knew about this for a month, too. PP is right - what else know about their nominee that they’re not telling?

It's such a puzzle why women are abandoning the Republican party. I have such a hard time figuring it out.

You’d prefer we just go back to the sexual mores of Victorian England or puritan Massachusetts, right?

The women who signed that letter should be ashamed of themselves.
