Second year in a row locked out of lottery. I am PISSED. A high 200s at Latin. 100s. 75 at one school. My feeder patterns are JEFFERSON for a kid that scores 4s and 5s on PARCC. I HATE THIS SHIT.

Jefferson isn’t a bad school.

I think your karma and sense of entitlement clearly must have affected your master number.

It is a lottery. Your kid's 4s and 5s do not make them any more worthy of Washington Latin than anyone else.

I don’t believe in Karma.

The only thing that affected my SPOT is MY ADDRESS which is an issue of EQUITY NOT KARMA.

Your address keeps you out of a DCPS you like. It has nothing to do with whether you get into Washington Latin.

You would probably be unhappy with the WL academics anyway. It really isnt' more advanced than Jefferson.

Let’s stop pretending that Jefferson is a strong school.

The numbers are all online, but I've had friends get in the past couple of years with numbers in the high single digits.

Even the right address is far from a guarantee. We spent a ludicrous amount of money (a lot more than we can really afford, honestly) on a not-very-nice house just to get in-boundary for a good school, and we still got *nothing* in the lottery. Sure, two years from now, we'll be in for kindergarten. But I have no idea what we're going to do for those two years.

Thanks! How do I find the numbers? (Sorry, new to the lottery and kind of lost).

February Break. Similar to other school districts in the Northeast, DCPS will have a week-long vacation in late-February. This gives families an opportunity to rest during the long period between Winter Break and Spring Break.

Why not speak to parents who are happy as well? #bias

Much easier to find unhappy people. Maybe 10% of parents are happy today, and the other 90% are unhappy.

If you look at the statistics, this is untrue. In past years, the majority of applicants have matched, and most of those get one of their top three choices.

Your ADDRESS had nothing to do with your SPOT.

Just...Big picture...(zoom out a little)

The process is disheartening. This is where my frustration lies.

Go to a charter for free PreK or pay for preschool, like the rest of the country does

We put down a bunch of charters on our list. Didn't get into any of them.

And if we lived in "the rest of the country", paying for preschool would be fine. Our mortgage payment for a dumpy house here is more than it would cost for preschool plus the mortgage payment on a giant, gorgeous house in most places in the US.

We put all three of our kids in the lottery this year. Just found out we got into Shining Stars, which was our 3rd choice, and two out of three kids are waitlisted at School-Within-School. It is my own fault for not putting S-W-S as #2 for all of my kids but I really didn't think they had a chance to get in. But my son is waitlisted for Kindergarten at #2 while one daughter is waitlisted for pre-k 3 (at #527!), and the other isn't waitlisted because we had Shining Stars as her 2nd choice. It's my own fault for not putting them all in the same order but my question is: if our son does get into S-W-S, is there a chance of getting our daughter who is not waitlisted at S-W-S in (I know our daughter who is waitlisted there would move up the list if our son does get in)? Do we need to do something to get her back on a waitlist or is it too late?

I'm pretty sure you can put in an application now and if the #2 K spot gets pulled in, the non-applicant kid will be at the end of the list of those with sibling preferences (but in front of everyone without a sibling preference).

Then go live IB for an Early Action school if you want guaranteed free PK.

Are you really #70 at MV PK3?
We are also #70 MV for PK3....how would that work?

I meant to write #70s bc I couldn’t remember the exact number. It’s 78.

You can add yourself to more waitlists. There are enough PreK places, and a lot of lists move if you are on enough of them.
