Agree with you on this. Spence is definitely not above Brearley, and neither is Dalton. I would say Trinity, Brearley and Collegiate are neck and neck. And if we are going by Niche rankings, Brearley is number 1. |

what exactly is this ranking of?
reputation, college admissions, students intellect, rigor of classes? I just think it's so hard to rank between the top 7-8 schools - each has it's strengths and weaknesses (relatively speaking). When we looked at K years ago, Dalton just rubbed us the wrong way. At the time we liked Riverdale the best. I think academics wise, HM and Brearley are probably the strongest. |
| I am surprise Marymount is above Sacred Heart. In addition, I thought of them as sending your dd for a sweet experience. |
I have never seen a list that had Spence above Brearley. |
PP here. Oh I agree. I have never seen Spence above Brearley on any list. Maybe a Spence parent created this original one? But also putting Dalton and Collegiate above Brearley. It is a reach. |
I would take this poster's ranking with a grain of salt. I like to look at Niche and other national rankings. At least these websites use statistics and have a reason behind their rankings. Are they 100 percent accurate? Probably not, but at least it makes more sense and there is data to back it up. These made-at-home lists are just what people think in their brain without any info to back it up. |
| I think it's supposed to be a prestige ranking but the problem is the prestige is only based on a few urban moms. It's not based on objective criterias. For academics, I'd look at the average SAT scores to see if a particular school is solid. Then look at college eximission to see if it's a match to DC's goal. Whether or not it's prestigeous on dcum is irrelevant. |
Average SATs largely line up with prestige for private schools. You will not find numerous examples of the two diverging. These are some of the smartest, most competitive parents on earth (for better and often for worse). They are doing their due diligence. |
Niche is very bad, you have no name schools with open admissions before you even hit the 15+ rankings. National rankings are also worthless because (outside boarding schools) no one moves across the country for a particular HS. Comparing HM with Chicago Latin is a worthless exercise. You will find that the TTs have very rigorous academics, all seven of them. Of that ranking a poster gave (which has a lot of issues), the top 20 are largely accurate based on rigor of the schools and exmissions. The main issue with it is when you go below 20 and, frankly, at that point the question is whether you are Catholic, want a progressive pedagogy, live in Manhattan or another borough, and other matters that go beyond academic rigor. |
| How does one single poster know enough about all 20 schools (30-40 if you count T4) to qualify as an expert in ranking them? I want to know. |
I highly disagree that Spence and Dalton are above Brearley. That is a gigantic reach, and you won't find that kind of list anywhere. In terms of Niche and national rankings, they are far from perfect, but I feel like they makes more sense and use more information then a anonymous message board in DCurban moms. I do agree that people should choose what school best fits their family and their beliefs over any kind of ranking system. |
I am an about to be retired private admissions advisor. I have worked with most of these schools for decades, although to be fair about five of them I’ve never had a client apply to. People can quibble over any given school plus or minus five spots. But ten point jumps aren’t sustainable arguments. |
thoughts on attending the following schools for 9th grade? Trevor, Unis, cgps, basis. kid is semi smart - specialized high schools are out, will not thrive there. Financially we can afford it due to savings, employer, family. ADHD. |
