That's really interesting. I'm sure it's in part due to misogyny and that sex is titillating. But it's also because it sort of goes to the core of the female struggle over thousands of years and so it provides a lot of meat for female actresses dealing with the female condition. At some level, we're all dealing with the comidification of our bodies and trying to find a way to assert ownership of our sexuality and selves.

NP and I think you are giving the academy more credit than they deserve. They love to glamorize sex work and do “research” and thank the sex worker community. They don’t give two sh**s. Sex and nudity sells and they exploit women in movies all the time.

+ 1 billion!!!

And the cycle just repeats as movie houses back movies they know “will sell” sex/nudity. I disagree that stories about sex workers are about THE human condition or even the female condition. They are stories about a subset of people. If they are the only stories honored, is overall disservice to women and reinforces to be in entertainment as a female, greatest odds your roles will be a stripper, sex worker, rape victim or cadaver who was a stripper, sex worker or rape victim.

Hard agree. You’ve nailed i.

I was horrified by the sex worker community thank yous as though any of them will ever talk to a sex worker again.

I met someone who was turned into a sex worker against her will, and it's just not a situation to glorify.

She looks pained because she needs to eat. She needs to go to Subway and get a foot long. She is in pain because she stopped eating. Ariana if you are reading this, please stop this shit and eat some food. Please.

She often looks in pain. It's weird she can't see that. I hope someone can get help for her.

Yes, he threw it to his wife. 😂

Oh that’s not his wife that’s his girlfriend. You know whose wife she was though? Harvey Weinstein.

Yikes. Another strike against Adrian Brody.

She left him in 2017 when all of the accusations started. The divorce wasn’t finalized until 2021, but she didn’t stand by him and isn’t responsible for his crimes.

He was always gross and there was zero reason for any woman to ever be with him other than to advance her career and be really rich. Even when he was at the top of his game, no one was saying "Oh, he's so hot" or "He's such a nice guy with a wonderful sense of humor." He was a power broker who looked like Jabba the Hut on his best day. And his reputation as a lech was well known (even if people didn't know the non-consensual part of it). She's not responsible for her crimes, but it's all still gross.

Sorry, you're saying that it's suspicious whenever someone marries a fat person? Or is the crime that he was both fat and successful - that's what someone's not allowed to decide they want in their life?

Obviously Weinstein is a horrible person who did unforgivable things. But you're saying before his ex-wife knew about those things she already should have rejected him?

It’s not that he was fat. It was that he had no redeeming qualities other than being a power broker. He was a disgusting person inside and out. I think we can all imagine getting blinded by the looks of a gorgeous charming man who is a creep (armie hammer) or also falling for a guy who isn’t great looking but has a really great personality (Danny devito, Patton Oswald, John Goodman). But Weinstein? I just can’t have any respect for any woman that married him.

Oh yes, it's completely unbelievable and unprecedented that a beautiful woman would be seduced by power and money. Simply unheard of.

Sean Baker's movies are all about sex workers. He will certainly be talking to them again. Did you see The Florida Project? Or any of his other films?

I liked Anora. It was well done. And I disagree that it’s not about the human condition - from my vantage point it is and transcends a story purely about sex workers.

My concern is that Anora got the attention it did because the sex scenes / dancing scenes were relatively graphic for theater movies. If it weren’t so graphic and these scenes shot to be less revealing and “real”, the movie would not have gotten the kind of attention it did. And this isn’t just bad for women actors, it plays into a mode of “gimmicky” film making that isn’t great for audiences. It’s akin to movies that get attention for the special effects or “realistic” graphic violence versus the story line and acting underneath it.

In sum: Mickey Madison was great in Anora. Strong performance. Good movie. But she shouldn’t have won the Oscar.

I don't think that's why it got so much attention - though we are living in a pretty sexless time overall, as far as movies go. I think it got a lot of attention because it felt urgent and funny and exciting and unexpected in a way that many movies just don't right now. The main character just kind of went for it when it came to every part of her life - and kept coming up against people trying to take her down. Then she had this unexpected moment of tenderness that just about did her in. It was a very emotional movie.

I disliked how graphic it was - I'm a prude, and these people are too young for me to be looking at their bare bodies. But I think to the extent the nudity and sex helped sell the movie, it's because it was about how raw and unguarded the main character was in every way, despite having a job where she had to literally put on a show.

Did you marry a slug for money? Is that why you are defending her so much? Or are you her publicist? Of course it’s not unheard of for a woman to marry a super gross guy for his power and money. But by doing so, she becomes gross too. Maybe not as gross. But also gross.

Da’Vine Joy Randolph won best supporting for The Holdovers last year for her beautiful portrayal of an ordinary woman. I loved that movie so much and it did not rely on any sex or outrageous anything.

I LOVED The Holdovers so much and she was wonderful in it.

No, I married a fat guy for love. And I continue to love him. I think your comments are repulsive.

Oof. It makes her waist look larger and draws attention to her old looking arms. Hard pass.

I knew I didn't like this, but it took me a while to figure out why.

Her boobs are RIDICULOUS. I'd want her in something that de-emphasizes them. And yes, cover or give her the option to cover her arms.

Her hair is too long -- not so much because of her age, but because it's getting straggly. Cut a few inches off. Dress in a color.

She looked much nicer at the Golden Globes.

I am 60. Agree with much of what you said. But disagree on the arms. That is why older women look so matronly at these events -- they are worried about their arms and cover them. Her arms a great and I think she looks good. Not like she is 20 but good. If you think she needs to cover her arms, got help us and help you when you turn 60! We need to set different standards.

Agree with you. There is nothing wrong with her arms. I am more worried about her face. She is starting to not look like herself. I hate it when they do the things that start to make them look alien. It's so off-putting. I do not like that people are starting to find those faces to be "normal" on older women and praise them. Let people age naturally FFS.

The fact that you can’t see the difference between your situation and Harvey Weinstein’s marriage is somewhat concerning. But whatever.

Wikipedia says she is dyslexic and was born with a condition that made her pigeon-toed. I’m guessing low self-esteem also made it easy for a rich powerful predator to mess up her mind.

I thought Meg Ryan is starting to look like herself again- back in her Sally days.

She was such a darling back then. I thought she looked great—loved the dress on her.
