That's really interesting. I'm sure it's in part due to misogyny and that sex is titillating. But it's also because it sort of goes to the core of the female struggle over thousands of years and so it provides a lot of meat for female actresses dealing with the female condition. NP and I think you are giving the academy more credit than they deserve. They love to glamorize sex work and do “research” and thank the sex worker community. They don’t give two sh**s. Sex and nudity sells and they exploit women in movies all the time.

And the cycle just repeats as movie houses back movies they know “will sell” sex/nudity. I disagree that stories about sex workers are about THE human condition or even the female condition. They are stories about a subset of people. If they are the only stories honored, is overall disservice to women and reinforces to be in entertainment as a female, greatest odds your roles will be a stripper, sex worker, rape victim or cadaver who was a stripper, sex worker or rape victim.

I liked Anora. It was well done. And I disagree that it’s not about the human condition - from my vantage point it is and transcends a story purely about sex workers.

My concern is that Anora got the attention it did because the sex scenes / dancing scenes were relatively graphic for theater movies. If it weren’t so graphic and these scenes shot to be less revealing and “real”, the movie would not have gotten the kind of attention it did. And this isn’t just bad for women actors, it plays into a mode of “gimmicky” film making that isn’t great for audiences. It’s akin to movies that get attention for the special effects or “realistic” graphic violence versus the story line and acting underneath it.

In sum: Mickey Madison was great in Anora. Strong performance. Good movie. But she shouldn’t have won the Oscar.

I'm not sure Anora would have received as much attention if the main actor in Emilia Perez had not posted racist comments to her social media. Emilia Perez was the talk of the town until the racist posts came out.

I noticed the Oscars pretty much kept the actress off screen as much as possible.

I find it somewhat ironic that people mostly agree that the reason Timothée Chalamet didn't get Best Actor is that the Academy thinks he's too young and will have many more chances, but that Mikey Madison won for Anora despite being up against several very established actresses who turned in highlight reel performances (Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres).

Men: don't worry, we know you'll have long careers and lots of meaty roles well into your 40s, 50s, even 60s, so no need to give you an Oscar in your youth.

Women: get it while it's hot!

NP and I have a hard time believing she didn’t know or hear the rumors of how he treated actresses. It was an open secret in Hollywood and she is a successful fashion designer. She knew.

He was always gross and there was zero reason for any woman to ever be with him other than to advance her career and be really rich. Even when he was at the top of his game, no one was saying "Oh, he's so hot" or "He's such a nice guy with a wonderful sense of humor." He was a power broker who looked like Jabba the Hut on his best day. And his reputation as a lech was well known (even if people didn't know the non-consensual part of it). She's not responsible for her crimes, but it's all still gross.

Sorry, you're saying that it's suspicious whenever someone marries a fat person? Or is the crime that he was both fat and successful - that's what someone's not allowed to decide they want in their life?

Obviously Weinstein is a horrible person who did unforgivable things. But you're saying before his ex-wife knew about those things she already should have rejected him?

It’s not that he was fat. It was that he had no redeeming qualities other than being a power broker. He was a disgusting person inside and out. I think we can all imagine getting blinded by the looks of a gorgeous charming man who is a creep (armie hammer) or also falling for a guy who isn’t great looking but has a really great personality (Danny devito, Patton Oswald, John Goodman). But Weinstein? I just can’t have any respect for any woman that married him.

Yeah as he was going on about how much better it was to go to a theater I was thinking, no, it really, really isn’t. It sounded like begging at that point. It sucks for theaters, but make it a better experience and people will reconsider. But right now, it loses big time compared to my big screen TV, my own food that is free and a bathroom break anytime I want without having to miss anything.

I am 60. Agree with much of what you said. But disagree on the arms. That is why older women look so matronly at these events -- they are worried about their arms and cover them. Her arms a great and I think she looks good. Not like she is 20 but good. If you think she needs to cover her arms, got help us and help you when you turn 60! We need to set different standards.

No, I get it -- her arms are amazing, and she should show them off if she wants. It's the contrast between the ropy muscles of her arms and the HUGE inflatable boobs that is off-putting. If she had a wrap, she could kind of cover them if she felt like it or let them show if she preferred that. To me, her look here has pieces -- the boobs, the arms, the hair -- and it doesn't really work together, especially with the sort of harsh makeup.

I don’t know if she’s hungry or not but I noticed that all of the young women who stopped at the photo place on the red carpet made that ridiculous face. I think it’s from SM? It reminds me of those expensive perfume commercials where the woman is running and then stops and looks at the camera with that face that is half crazy half afraid.
