Again for the people in back. IT DOESN’T MATTER. It’s illegal to promise money not appropriated. And we are under a CR until 3/14. No matter how many loopholes they close, it’s not real until Congress says it is. Separation of powers? Congress has the power of the purse?

Sad how many feds would fail a civic 101 exam.

+1 And Congress is probably not going to appropriate funds for people to sit around and do nothing for 8 months. Can you imagine how well that would go over back home? Case in point, my family back home has no idea this has been going on for week. I explained the deferred resignation thing to my brother (conservative but not MAGA) and he was like excuse me....WHAT? I told him about the "take a vacation" language, and I thought his head was going to explode. Fun times.

THIS congress would - because it is in the hands of a bunch of Republicans who are not going to interfere with their leader's efforts. And democrats are not going to let the federal workers get stiffed.

By the time it’s time to appropriate the money, the workers will already be gone and Rs will just say they didn’t deserve it anyway lazy feds blah blah. It’s not like Musk or Trump are the kind to expend any effort or political capital to avoid stiffing people. On the contrary - that’s how they work.

Uh, how dumb can you be? The Republicans who are so fine and upstanding they are allowing all kinds of laws to be broken? Who are standing by while their own powers as members of Congress are being stomped to the ground? Those Republicans?

I’m a lifelong Democrat but one thing I hare about some who share my party affiliation is this idea that government should rescue you from your own stupidity.

If federal workers sign onto something that is illegal and believe leaders who have a track record of not honoring contracts, then they should expect to pay for their stupidity.

Read the Fork contracts. The TLDR version says you acknowledge that you have no recourse if they don’t keep their word.

What kind of moron signs off on a deal like that????

A lot more people would have jumped on it if it was legal and was guaranteed to be implemented. It's actually a very generous offer in theory! But consider that Twitter employees had to SUE to get Elon to comply with their Fork... doesn't give you much confidence, does it?

I didn’t say I think it’s legit-but the 65,000 people who took it think it is so let them go and give the rest of us a little breathing room until the next hammer.

Wow. Gotta love your empathy.

Sadly, this is "Lord of the Flies" -- Federal style. You learn to lay low, blend into the herd, and you increase your chances of survival.

In the end the Twitter forkers didn't get severance because they resigned voluntarily. IMPORTANT TIP for fed forkers: don't resign voluntarily. DON'T SIGN ANY RESIGNATION PAPERS without legal review. Definitely delay signing a few days for anything that's presented to you. And refuse to sign if it doesn't come from your agency HR.

Will these people even be eligible to file for
unemployment if they end up getting stiffed?

So what is happening with the Fork Deal? Aren't the people who accepted only required to work one more week? Have they been told anything? Or has Musk forgotten about them already?

And based on the OPM FAQs, it says that all full time employees are eligible for the offer. So, it seems like firing the probationary employees goes against that info.

Lots of people were ineligible, despite the FAQs. For example, entire agencies were exempted — ours said a few days in that we could not fork and anyone who had already forked would be deemed ineligible. Then went ahead and fired the probationary employees anyway. I’m sure with any probationary fed who applied they were rejected just so they could be fired with no pay
