My DH and I both had this experience growing up. Sure, you snooze, you lose, but it’s also sad as a kid to be reminded constantly that no one is going to go out of their way to think of you or do something small for you like save a donut. (And it happened with way more than donuts).

So we don’t have the issue raised by this thread. We always ask before eating the last of something whether anyone else especially wanted it. We do it to be kind.

Your mom was probably incentivizing people to wake up. How long did it take you to figure that out?

Growing up in the circle I did, the birthday child’s name was always saved for them or their picture if it was a photo cake. Then other kids or adults would choose to eat the icing flowers slices.

No, to answer the is food thrown away, no so the food would then be open grounds for anyone present to take a second or third helping so the person who wasn’t there for dinner would be fending for themselves and grabbing whatever other leftovers are in the fridge or cooking themselves something. However they decide.

My family does the name thing too, and growing up I thought it was a thing but as an adult I see it's not, though I always wince when someone starts cutting the cake in the middle of the name so even if a person wanted the name after a few slices were served, they couldn't get. I always cut it and hand it to the birthday person.

Op here.Happy to hear other people do this also. I still make it a point as well. 🙂

I think I was so accustomed to it happening in the birthday parties I have attended, it’s interesting to see that not many others have grown up doing this.
