College and University Discussion
Not as good as public schools in the Northeast. |
Ye must strive for the Ivies, UVA, or an overpriced SLAC on DCUM's "approved" list. |
Nope. Get out of your bubble. https://www.bestcolleges.com/research/roe-v-wade-impacts-college-students/ “39% of Prospective Undergrads Say Roe v. Wade Ruling Impacts College Decision The majority of students oppose the U.S. Supreme Court's decision overturning Roe v. Wade and desire to attend college in a state that legally protects the right to an abortion.”
|
I thought DCUM loved vaccine mandates and preferred to send their kids to a place where vaccines were, in fact, mandated? Has the tide changed? |
Ch 9 The Story is Not Over! Kids do care about the abortion laws and vaccination requirements because, in addition to their own issues, they are indicators of other potential issues from an ignorant, angry political climate. My kid is bi and very worried that some of the legislatures that passed abortion bans and vaccine mandate bans will also pass restrictions on LGBTQ. She does not want to be in an environment like Florida where the laws suggest who she is is not acceptable content for young people's reading material. It feels like an attack on her identity. |
Exactly. It’s the underlying political climate that is the issue. It’s not limited to devaluing women, science, transgender, etc. |
| Well there’s not much evidence that the 39 percent is actually putting their money where their mouth is. |
It just happened 6 months ago. Applications aren’t even all in yet for the current cycle. It will take a few years to have meaningful numbers to quantify the impact. The point was that it’s a real concern for many kids. |
There are comparable high schools, but southern districts tend to be larger so the districts as a whole are usually not as good. Public school districts in the Northeast are so small that those centered around well off areas may as well be private schools. I guess we should congratulate them for skillful economic segregation? |
Good for those kids. South Eastern and South Western flagships tend to be incredibly generous with merit aid. The price difference between on of those schools with merit and their in state flag ship could be easily approach 100k. Not every kid can afford to take a stand, but great for the rich kids who can |
Even the less affluent areas have better schools. When you try to make schools into educational factories the quality of education goes way down. Kids aren’t widgets. |
| Is this really true though? I feel like the only school I see kids consistently turn down Ivies for is Duke. At my kid's school Duke is more desirable than half the Ivies, but after that the dropoff for Southern schools is quite large. Very few kids would pick, say Vanderbilt or Rice, over an Ivy, and certainly not Emory or Wake Forest. |
Do you realize how small a portion of kids care at all about the Ivies? Nothing you said negates OP's premise |
and despite the warm weather, the South is evidently full of snowflakes. |
There's at least one wacko on here from college confidential who gets unhinged when people detail how miserable midwest is. |
