Why are Northern Kids Flocking to Southern Universities?

Anonymous
The kids at southern colleges seem to be having a lot of fun and enjoying the sun, while kids at northern colleges are all wearing frumpy clothes, poofy black parkas and have sullen expressions on their faces.

DCUM gets mad when people actually like the South.

and despite the warm weather, the South is evidently full of snowflakes.

Here’s a shocker. Ya’ll already live in the south in the DCUM area.

That must be a northeast thing.

There's at least one wacko on here from college confidential who gets unhinged when people detail how miserable midwest is.

That’s funny. There’s only one wacko on here who constantly talks about the “miserable” Midwest. Try looking in the mirror Jack wad! .

That’s doesn’t change the fact that you’re considered southerners.

It just happened 6 months ago. Applications aren’t even all in yet for the current cycle. It will take a few years to have meaningful numbers to quantify the impact.

The point was that it’s a real concern for many kids.

We are liberal and my child, who is more to the left of us, goes to a super liberal private. She is applying almost exclusively to southern schools. How do you think these states are ever going to get more liberal if no liberals are willing to move there? Our child wants warm weather and sports plus academics, she isn’t focused on the politics.

So if you go by that then all the DCUM comments about the south aren’t out of ignorance or jealousy but the hard truths that you only tell people in your family.

The Mason-Dixon Line is just a historical and geographic demarcation & doesn't represent the current social and political climate in the DMV. You also can't lump Emory, Vandy & Duke into the same conversation with Univ of TN, 'Bama and Auburn. In my DD's group, plenty of kids are interested in Clemson as their first choice, but will accept an SEC school if their other applications aren't successful. In that scenario, I think the ease of admission and financial incentives are attractive.

If Clemson ever gets into the SEC, what ever will DC high schoolers do?

I said kids would accept AN SEC school, not another SEC school or another ACC school. Reading is fundamental.

You CAN lump Clemson into "the same conversation," though, even though your DD's friend group isn't.
