Southern universities have moved on from covid. It’s not surprising that someone who is 18 wants to spend $60k a year on a school where you’re allowed to attend parties, don’t have to take frequent nasal swabs, and aren’t required to take repeated boosters for covid. Not to mention better weather, fun sporting events and prettier women. |
Money is part of it if you live in a state without great in state options. Many southern schools are much cheaper OOS than private options. |
And the cost. The 50k OOS for many southern state schools looks good in comparison for the 75-80k for these schools |
We live in the DMV, and our 2 kids want nothing to do with the South. Both crave the cold/snow (think MI, and New England). Neither applied to any southern states, because they wanted cold, and because of politics.
2 girls, one is a college sophomore and the other a HS senior waiting to hear |
UVM and Wisconsin are definitely trendy at the moment. The rise of Pitt is notable; people looking for the next urban school with rolling admissions and an honors college are Minnesota-curious. But that trend isn’t counterintuitive, so it’s not going to rate a magazine story. |
My kid went south in 2021. HATED online school and felt they were more likely to stay fully open without masks and virtual classes. Turned out to be true - although I think it would be less of an issue now since all schools have been fully open for a while. |
We are very happy to see DMV kids move to Southern Universities. We know who they are, They truly belong in those places. |
I know a kid went to Alabama. Full ride to honors college. A year later there were photos of the kid at William and Mary and a post from a parent about how Alabama hadn’t been a good fit. |
It's easier to get into and the weather is warmer.
THats the answer. Nothing more, nothing less. And no nothing to do with politics.. |
Less girls will probably now want to live in states where they are denied their right to an abortion so this trend might reverse. |
Simple The schools are easier to get into. The northern schools are much more competitive |
Fewer, FEWER! |
+1 And cheaper. |
I did this 10 year ago for grad school. I don’t regret it and I ended up staying in the south permanently. If I had not gone to a southern university, I would not have the job or the social circle I do now. I would certainly not discourage it if your chid is interested. |
All schools have moved on from COVID. The South isn't special, outside of the insidious objectification of women, which is a different kind of special. |
