She is a target for being young, blond, pretty. Parents did not figure that out?

It is what is is. Rural area. Drinking (probably). Driving when she shouldn’t be either drunk or in the dark in a very rural area. She made poor choices and it cost her.

Sad but preventable. Poor parents and poor choices didn’t pan out well.

Very sad. She was stuck with her parents and even though she was bright, it didn't help her understand how to make better choices. Parent modeling is really impactful and, in this case, bad parent modeling this girl her life.

How does one go about joining a diving search and rescue team?

Look forward to the toxicology report. Likely more than just alcohol in her system after a party like that. If she wasn't DUI, she could have easily been raped by some random man in such a state.

It was likely illegal for a 16 year old driver to be operating a vehicle after sundown. It's illegal for a reason. New drivers and night driving don't mix.

After sundown? Where did you get this idea? My nephew just got his license and they only time restrictions are that he isn't supposed to drive from 11PM to 7AM "except for work or school." Way after sunset.

Sue my parents for being more restrictive than the law allows.

You said it was “likely illegal” to drive after sunset. Don’t backpedal now to “sue my parents for being more restrictive.” Nope.

Tangent from the latest posts:

1) I'm wondering if they will find any damage on the car that would be consistent with an accident with another car, and her careening into the lake.

2) One thing that occurred to me is the method of "waking parent up when kid gets home" ONLY works if everything is okay.

Now in this situation, it wouldn't have made a difference. Even if the mom was watching the car on Life360, she would have still drowned. (They would have found the car right away, though. And if she had Life360 you can track the last day or two even on the basic, free app)

But there are plenty of situations where having the "wake up parent" method could mean the difference between life and death. So...if we learn anything it's not to use the "wake up parent when kid gets home" method.

3) I hope they don't come after the mom for letting her kid drive after hours, etc. Totally bad, but I think this mom has suffered enough and it's not like she doesn't know that her allowing her daughter to drive was a but/for cause of her death.

Ok Miss Wayfair.

Middle class blonde teens aren’t the ones getting sex trafficked. It’s foster kids, mostly Black, Hispanic and indigenous foster kids from poor families.

The shit y’all share on FB about being stalked at Target is a joke. Sex trafficking happens everyday, and the thing that kills us who work with the rea victims first hand is that nobody cares about these kids but us.

I wish you could see what we’ve seen. These middle class white teen girls biggest concerns are boyfriend, step-daddy and drunk driving. If you have a white privileged boy it’s alt-right & Andrew Tate.

Usually as part of a LEO or FD unit. In rural areas, it’s typically volunteers, like the FD.

Pretty specialized skillset though. Your PADI Open Water card and logbook showing a half dozen dives at various Caribbean destinations ain’t gonna cut it.

SF Gate had a thoughtful article on how awful online discussion was about this case.

The movie Taken is the closest thing that most people have reference to for sex trafficking. You are clearly correct that traffickers are not going after pretty white girls, because they are the ones that get media/LE attention.

Be honest. With the way you write there is no way you've held a job longer than a week.
