School board - who to vote for

The BOE did a horrible job keeping schools closed for 18 months for most students, there’s been a lack of resources at the school level to address the pandemic learning loss, there’s been no plan to address the shortages for in school and substitute positions, and the BOE gave a contract to a Superintendent that had two votes of no confidence by the union members underneath her.

One quick note, while we're discussing incumbents and pandemic - Scott Joftus was appointed to the BoE in December, to fill the seat vacated by Patricia O'Neill's passing. So while he is technically an incumbent he does not bear any responsibility for the Board's handling of the first 18 months of pandemic. I'd urge people to keep this in mind before chucking him out with the rest of the incumbents.

For those who aren't aware of Joftus's background, he has a very different profile / background than the average BoE member and is in my view much more qualified:

Did he support McKnight? Because she's just awful and I can't see why they spent so much money looking for people for the job and ended up with her. ugh

How do you know anyone better even wanted the job?

Joftus is perfect for the BOE because he and his wife have readymade lies to spew while they suck money away from MCPS. Classic is claiming that you have been evaluated every year when you've never been evaluated and MCPS only took a head count for two years.

To be honest, with all the drama about Joftus and his family with KID Museum, I personally do not think he would be a good choice for BOE.

To be honest if the parents coalition is trying to sink him that’s a point in his favor.

Anyone who tries to make a difference in the world will create drama.

Look what they did with the Director of Transportation? They exposed his shady contracting deals and next thing you know he's out because he embezzled $1.2M and ripped off his MCPS credit card for $500K. He was great for MCPS! Parents love MCPS staff who embezzle and rip off students. That is the MCPS brand. We need more embezzlers. That's what keeps the public schools strong. It teaches kids how to get what they want no matter what the law or rules say. Joftus funding his wife's hobby is a perfect example for kids. Always be looking for ways to rip off schools. Joftus' wife lied about her program and got millions of MCPS and ESSER dollars for doing so. Do keep him in office so she can keep up her hobby in Bethesda.

How close do you guys expect the BOE races to be? I was planning to vote early this week but was home with a sick kid two days and missed it, I thought I still had today. It’s going to be hard for me to get to the polls on Tuesday- how much of an effort should I make to get there?

I would expect the District 5 race (Wolff/Coll) to be the closest, given the primary results were basically tied.

Very close. Some candidates have actually been campaigning. It only matters if schools are important to you, otherwise, skip it.

Today is the deadline for a registered voter to request an electronic vote-by-mail ballot. They will email you a pdf, and you have to print it out and provide your own return envelope, but then you can drop it in a drop box by Tuesday.

Thanks- I asked because I feel like I've already done my part for the other county/state races by voting in the primary (where there is no real contest in the general), and some years it feels like this is the case for BOE too. I will get there, I forgot the polling places open at 7am and usually ours is not too crazy so will go then.

I would sort of like both of them to be on the board. But I voted for Joftus.

I thought this was a helpful piece about both of them in Bethesda Beat.

I merely said it was helpful, did not say in which direction. But I will say only one of the two candidates spoke to something that is one of my top concerns.

And you can be sure the hubs will keep speaking to stuff for years. He won't do anything, ever, but he will keep speaking to stuff. That's why all his supposed supporters haven't donated to his campaign. Julie Yang has far and away out campaigned and fundraised compared to hubs.

Have to agree. Will probably vote for him just because those nuts are against him.

Great news for fraud, waste and abuse of MCPS Operating Budget! Many, many vendors ready to siphon off MCPS $$$ thank you! Especially the vendors that are embezzling cash like the diesel bus company in Annapolis. You've made their world a happier place.
