School board - who to vote for

Anonymous
How much does everyone like the new board? Are we going to see the same problems?
Anonymous
Yes , same problems. Same Sup, same central office staff, same budget. A few new faces won't change ge any of that and you need a majority to vote to make a change - nearly impossible
Anonymous
Wolffe is still there. I doubt anything will change and my bet is she'll run the board off the cliff.

Disagree, sure, I read the nutty conspiracy posts about things like bocce here or minor programs some parents don't like, but that's inevitable with any democracy. You can't please everyone... Overall my kids are getting a great education.

Like the multi-million dollar embezzlement by the transportation director. Nutty stuff. No one cares if MCPS staff embezzle millions for decades. No school needs the money and we have plenty of bus drivers. Wolff hasn't said a word about that embezzlement and she won't. She knows she can cover it up because MCPS parents are idiots.

No more like the person who is angry they bought sports equipment for disabled kids or goes on about some conspiracy about the kid's museum ad infinitum, even though Joffus made his conflict clear up front and recused himself from that decision.

And exactly who goes to Kid Museum? Please post the list, because I'm sure of who hasn't gone and I want to see what millions of taxpayer dollars bought. There are scattered claims by one or two (anonymous) posters, but all that means is that a lot of money may have been spent on a handful of kids? Show me the proof.

[shrug] You really think Scott Joftus was a major cause of MCPS's problems? There are like a thousand more important things. And if you are bothered by the Kid Museum programs' very existence, well, they're still there.

No but the unhinged crazies seem to think there's a conspiracy involving the issue where he recused himself. Not sure how that works but they're foaming at the mouth over this and bocce ball.

Is there any way to at least get her off the Presidency? How is the President of the BoE elected?

I do think it’s interesting that Joftus was resounded beaten but Wolff still got a lot of support. I thought everyone was sick of the incumbents. The fact that she was in a position of leadership and showed a remarkable lack of leadership skills is especially jarring.

Brenda isn't perfect, but I would take her over Valerie any day. Valerie is beholden to MCEA. She is on some committee there.

Why is that a bad thing? The union should have a seat at the table since this should be a partnership not board vs the teachers.

Nope. The union has enough representation with all of the seats they buy.

Brenda Wolff has her seat because of the Apple Ballot. That's how she got elected in the first place. She's just as much Apple Ballot as Coll, even more because Wolff came from the Montgomery County Democratic Central Committee leadership.

Like I said, Brenda is the lesser of two evils. Coll wants mandatory masking and is 100% behind union pushes. The union is the main reason schools took so long to open in 2020.

Brenda Wolff voted to keep schools closed for a year. Definitely not the lesser of two evils.

She kept our kids and teachers aafe and as every studied show Southern where schools remained open had similar learning loss, but higher death rates. She's a freaking hero!.

"There were 697 “serious incidents” at county public schools—calls for service including assaults, weapons offenses and sex offenses—during the 2021-2022 academic year, according to data from the Montgomery County Police Department."

If you are stupid enough to not understand that Joftus is just one example of the entire MCPS culture then there is no hope for this county. There are a thousand more examples of exactly this. MCPS slipping friends no bid contracts, under the table deals, money diverted to personal uses (see the embezzlement in Transportation, remember??) and failure to repair schools and fund classroom needs. Did you miss the teachers are begging for school supplies on Facebook? Joftus is one example of what is the MCPS culture.

They sound unhinged. The guy was upfront about his conflict and even recused himself from the vote on that. Not sure what else a person can do. The fact that this is what they've fixated on shows a real lack of judgment. I really don't care about that. Things that interest me are:
1) Update boundaries to reduce transportation costs
2) Stop focusing on gaps or trying to bring everyone to the LCD. Meet all students where they are.
3) Expand access to popular special programs where there are more qualified students than seats.
Anonymous
How about increase pay for teachers and reduce demands from central office? And then hire more teachers! Then we won't keep losing more teachers (maybe)

How many current teaching positions are being filled by long-term substitutes? And how many of them are qualified (espnin special ed)?

Joftus is focused on himself and his resume. Unhinged is thinking that Joftus is ever going to care about your 1,2 and 3. Does any of that impact his bottom line? No. Get over yourself.

Update boundaries to reduce transportation costs? LOL That was posted as a joke, right? The director of MCPS has been taking home an extra $1-$2 million for years and you think that changing boundaries will reduce transportation costs? LOL Dream on.

These are good suggestions but we also need more support service, especially early on with reading, speech, etc. and we also need to bring back basics like textbooks as some kids learn better from a traditional teaching style. We've had so many boundary studies. Just make the changes and be done with it.
