Vanguard wasn’t making a bid. |
Will Twitter maintain its user base if it goes private with Musk? |
Can the government perhaps step in to seize Twitter (to nationalize it in effect) in order to prevent the disinformation and unbridled chaos that social media has caused and has since 2018 destroyed democracy? |
So going for the Putin/Xi/Maduro plan? |
Doubtful. |
Not at all. No one foresaw how problematic giving everyone a platform would become. Unfortunately many just spew hate or spread disinformation about subjects they are little qualified to speak on. We were very naive in the past. So maybe the government doesn’t nationalize social media, but rather heavily regulates it like we do with other industries - maybe through the FCC. As seen all the time, the majority of Americans simply lack the self-control decorum to check themselves. |
You'll be the final arbiter, huh? Censorship cloaked in the gossamer veil of good taste and truth. Hah! |
Can Twitter be hit with lawsuits, for example over the hundreds of thousands of people who died unnecessarily because of anti-vaxx and other COVID related disinformation? How about political disinformation? Those could quickly destroy Twitter. |
Someone decided to listen to anti-science garbage and then dies because they did not protect themselves? I don't think it is illegal to listen to nonsense. |
No, because the platform is protected by Section 230 from user-generated content. The user is liable, not the platform. |
I just removed my accounts, not that I used them that much. |
This is crazy. Get a grip. A lot of the unbridled chaos on social media has come from the left or, in some cases, even the government. |
Poison pill is still in place, right? |
That's only for a hostile bid. Right now, there isn't a hostile bid out there. Twitter is actively negotiating with Musk. Probably stuck on form of consideration and break up fee. |
